50 "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
为了提高大学的教学质量,所有的教职员工应该去校外参加一些和他们教的课程相关的工作。
I agree with the speaker that it is necessary that some faculty spend time working outside the academic world to advance the quality of instruction, for the reason that the theories learned at the college would be integrated with practical application better. However, not all tutors should take this way to improve teaching, after all the main mission for the faculty is researching in the academic world and instructing the students.
The level of instruction at the university needs to be raised as strong competition of jobs has taken graduates more pressure. Only if the quality of education is improved efficiently, can the graduates hold more chances for jobs and then obtain probably success. Accordingly, it is required that some tutors who are proficient in their professional field work outside to learn more practical needs and grasp dynamic situation related to the research. They would be the most direct vinculum between theory and practice and perfect mentors who can help the students know more about professional application and prospects. Moreover, within working outside the academic world the tutor would not only improve the level of the teaching, but also probably acquire more inspiration for the research which would break through the bottleneck. These faulty couldn’t be absent at the college or university which has a successful instruction.
While I don’t mean that all faculty should spend time engaging in outside job related to the subject they study. Furthermore, I disapprove that the quality of tuition would gain promotion only in this way. First, working outside the academic world must occupy the time and energy spending on academic research originally. Not everyone could ensure there is no delay on the academic research and instruction. It is easier said than done to work outside. The situation usually like that one can’t have the cake and eat it too. Second, although some tutors work outside, it can’t be sure that they could drive the level of instruction rising up. Third, on occasion once enjoy the pleasure from the world outside which couldn’t gain from the monotonous academic world, they may abandon the academic research and then put in the colorful world outside.
When universities take this measure to advance the level of education, it is significant to balance the pure academy and tutors who not only study the profession at the academic world, but also try to transform theory into practice with learning the real needs of the society relevant to their subjects. It is equally important for time-assignment between the academy and practical job. After all, faculty undertake the most vital mission—professional research and reasonable tuition.
For improving the quality of instruction, supporting a part of faculty to engage in some practical work outside the academy is necessary but not valid absolutely. The tactics should be improved reasonably and carried out within some effective rules which can ensure normal teaching order running. On this basis, sustaining the faculty to work outside may take more benefits to the tuition.
