50 "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

There is much controversy over the issue of the necessity for all faculty to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. Some people claim that practical experience plays an important role in improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level, while others advocate that the more time faculty spend in social activities, the more distracted they are, which leads to worse teaching performance. On balance, I would argue that the teachers’ workload should be fit for them to become experienced teachers.

The experienced teachers often bring newest knowledge to the students, broadening their horizons and extending the knowledge learning from courses into practical use. In the business schools, the profound professors are employed by companies as consultants to help these companies develop strategies and solve management problems. In return, the students learn from the actual cases the professors refer when they are illustrating abstract concepts.

On the contrary, the university students cannot get access to the fast-changing information and knowledge in relevant fields once their tutors are detached from the professions outside the academic world. Take the clinical medicine study as an example, teachers lack of practical experience are incapable to guide students. However, teachers occupied by overwhelming works outside the academic world are reluctant to assume the responsibility of teaching.

What’s more, working outside academic world sometimes distract the faculty from their own work in school, thus affecting the quality of instruction at the college and university. Concentrating on different subjects or projects, the consistency of teaching would likely to be disrupted. Preparing lessons, catching up students’ learning progress and answering their questions are time-consuming but necessary work.

Certainly working experience outside the academic world plays an important role in assisting teachers explain knowledge in more vivid ways, but too much workload would be counter-productive. The teachers should find the balance point in-between the two extremes.
