Argument188
A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

This report concludes that doctors should consider the different experience about pain when prescribing pain medications. To support this conclusion the researchers tested a kind of painkillers on 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted. Close scrutiny of the report, however, reveals logically unconvincing in several respects.

First of all, from the report we can not get the useful information about what did the researchers define about the degree of the pain. Then how can they distinguish the less pain and the pain? Do they have a criterion? If not or the pain just the feeling of the people, then it is entirely possible that different people have different feeling for the same pain, because the feeling is not only relate to physical body but also involve the psychology. So the experiment cannot rational certify the standpoint if they can’t deal with this doubt.

As for the experiment, there are 28 men and 20 women join in the test, and they used the kappa opioids on the teeth extracted, and no other information about the test. One people have said that “Detail is the key of success”. Maybe the men are all having other disease which aggravates the pain or they take something that counteracts the kappa opioids. Or the women are all healthier than the men, and this will inflect the result of the experiment. It is possible that the kappa opioids medicine is just the women-only medicine. If so, this would further undermine the report’s relevance in this respect.

Finally, the author unwarranted assumes that the researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women. As the development of technology and the theory of human body, there are more and more medications sell on the market, then it is impossible to test all kind of medicines. And I deem that the manufacturers and the Administration of Quality Supervision which have the obligation to explain detail of the pesticide effect.

In sum, the report is logically flawed and unconvincing as it stands. To bolster it the author must provide clearer evidence that men and women experience pain differently, and give rational recommendations on the medicine research.
