The speaker asserts that we should bring certain skepticism when we learning. In my view students should be ready to doubt, to challenge established authority, not just passively rote the knowledge. The purpose of learning is to use the knowledge to solve the problems what we may face in the life not to being storage.
The reason why I agree with the statement is that skepticism of what we study can help us to understand the knowledge well. We are the master of the knowledge that learned from other one and other place. We can not let our brain be the storage that various knowledge or even rubbish stored in it. We must learn to familiar with and refine the knowledge in our mind, and then learn to make the best use of them. The practice and answer the skepticism are two efficient ways to get the truth. When we suspect the knowledge that transmission to us, we will work hard to find the truth or get helps from other people or tools. Like, when I am not sure about the story of Leonardo da Vinci, the internet is useful tool to help me, the Wikipedia can give me some clues. After this we can get a bright network of Leonard da Vinci, next time will learn about him easier. Today, more and more knowledge are interdisciplinary, if we want to use them in the right way and right time, we must understand and clear the knowledge net before the emergency.
A second reason why I fundamentally agree with the statement is that, skepticism of what other teaching us can help to find the real knowledge of the matter and even new fact that implicate the in the superficial phenomenon. Before Michael Faraday, the English great scientist, many people may have been find the unusual phenomenon between electricity and magnetism, but most of them ignore it or follow the established authority that there is no relationship between them. But when Faraday find this phenomenon, he inquisitive it and then did experiments to explain the skepticism, the more experiments the clearer about the reason of this phenomenon, and after ten years’ hard working, he found the “Electromagnetic induction”. His invention of electromagnetic rotary devices formed the foundation of electric motor technology, and was largely due to his efforts that electricity became viable for use in technology. His discovery not only enriches his brain, but also promotes the development of human life.
A third reason for my agreement with the statement has to do with the personal improve. In schools we all have teached not to do this or that, but still some people forget it and crime in the society. If we understand and follow them, the counsels can make our society better. But many people just rote the rules, not to ask herself or others why we shouldn’t do this and why do that is good for the society. I reckon that if we can skeptic the counsels and to find the reason, then we can guide to a more bright direction.
In sum, the statement is fundamentally correct. We should learn to skeptic and find the truth through various ways. But we must hold in mind that going too far is as bad as going too little.
