TOPIC: ARGUMENT233 - The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a company that builds shopping malls throughout the country.
"The surface of a section of Route 101, paved two years ago by McAdam Road Builders, is now badly cracked and marred by dangerous potholes. In another part of the state, a section of Route 66, paved by Appian Roadways more than four years ago, is still in good condition. Appian Roadways has recently purchased state-of-the-art paving machinery, and it has hired a new quality-control manager. Because of its superior work and commitment to quality, we should contract with Appian Roadways rather than McAdam Road Builders to construct the access roads for all our new shopping malls."

In this memo the vice president of a company resulted that McAdam Road Builders (M) is not better than the Appian Roadways(A) for that Route 66 which was paved by A is still in a good condition and it has recently purchased
state-of the-art paving machinery and hires a new quality-control manager. However, as far as I concerned, this argument have several flaws to draw the conclusion.
First of all, the whole memo based on a false analogy between Route 101 and Route 66.Even both of them posited in a similar state, there is no guarantee that they are in an area with totally same geographic condition and bear the same weights during these years. It is quite possible that R101 is in a mountainous area, building condition is much worse than that of Route66, and in these places, it is almost take on the all traffic flues, on the other hand, Route 66 is built in plain area, besides cars, railway is a more convenient way and most people choose it, in that way, Route 101which is badly cracked and marred by dangerous potholes is reasonable. As a result, Route 101 and Route 66 do not establish a warranted analogy, so we cannot safely assume that.
Even if A has superior work and commitment to quality, building Route 66 and access roads for all new shopping malls are totally different in demands. As we know, Route 66 calls for more demands in quality, solidity and safety while shopping malls access roads need more factors like modern , fashion, beauty and initiation. Different requests may lead to different result, maybe A is good at construction like Route66, and cannot competent in the construction of access roads.
Last but not least, the author provide no evidence to demonstrate that A is a wiser option, if justify it only through its newly purchased paving machinery and quality-control manager, it is unfair and insufficient. Perhaps
workers in A company need lot of time to be familiar with the machine as well as lot of time to get to know this new manager, and construction should be put off, and
it is possible that M also own this new type of machine and it is performed better than A in shopping malls access roads.
Thus, the argument is unpersuasive as it stands, to strengthen it, the author need to offer more sufficient details about M and A. |
