First the twenty years study is untenable, simply because of the decline in average number of headaches reported by participants doesn't prove it is caused by salicylates added as preservatives, it maybe due rapid growth in economic so people are better off ; that's more reasonable for a duration of twenty years , we have declined average number in every disease not just headache. We need a comparison group with same conditions except food with salicylates difference to prove that salicylates is the reason to the decline in average number of headaches.
If salicylate is proved to be responsible, the same chemical family with aspirin doesn't make it qualified as headaches killer, we need a further study to find out the suitable amount to be used for mitigating ache. It is possible that we have too much salicylates to be benefit to our healthy once it is added as flavor additives.
We also need evidence to support that the interaction among salicylates with other elements of flavor does not affect it function as headache suppression.
All in all being of the same chemical family as aspirin does not mean it can treat headaches; the twenty years study is a bad try to prove salicylates is the reason of decline in numbers of headaches; and even the first two hold grounds , we still need to prove that salicylates does not lose its function when add to flavor additives.
