TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."
WORDS: 547

The argument is well presented, but not thoroughly reasoned. By citing a series of consequences, including the number of factories, air pollution level and the number patients with respiratory illnesses, all of which had increased under the current Clearview town council's government, the arguer recommends that residents of Clearview should vote Ann Green(AG), who is not a member of the current Clearview town council for the sake of environment seems logical.

Firstly, the argument assumes too hastily that the increasing number of factories in Clearview stand for severer pollution, and therefore, is a result of the current member's ignorance of environmental pollution.  However, it is no common to see new factories everywhere since we are living in a era of rapid industrialization. The arguer can not justifiably conclude that the  current council’s decisions about allowing new factories to be established in Clearview ,are not motivated by the concern of environmental protect in terms of how the extra tax dollars came from these new cooperates can be applied to enhance people's awareness of environmental pollution , or to the environmental protect itself.

Secondly, the increasing air pollution level and rampant respiratory illnesses do not necessarily result from the delinquency of the current council either. It is entirely possible that the Clearview town council had been struggling to mitigate the air pollution problem and finally the increasing speed of air pollution slowed down while the board air pollution level raised as usual. Or perhaps the increasing number of patients with respiratory illnesses is derived from the more rifle smoking habit among the residents, rather than any sort of environmental pollution. Without ruling out these or other possibilities, it is impossible to reach the merit of this argument.

Thirdly, another problem with the argument is that it assumes that the attitude of the current member of the Clearview town council’s about environmental pollution should be equally applied to its each member, including the candidate---Frank Braun(FB). However, common sense informs us that this assumption is a poor one. Even we accept the arguer's assumption that the current member's delinquency lead to today's environmental problems, we can not claim that FB is not concerned about the problem and should be attributable to these problems. Perhaps the department he belongs to has nothing to do or, at least, has no direct relationship with environment, such as financial department, sporting department and so forth.

Finally, even assuming all members of the current town council should not be the next mayor for their generally lacking consciousness of environmental problems, the arguer falsely assumes that AG must be the best choice. This "either or" argument is fallacious in that it does not make any analysis about this potential new mayor as well as provides no further information about this candidate expect the mere fact that he does not belong to the current "notorious" town council.

In sum, the argument is not as persuasive as it stands. To make it more logically acceptable, the arguer should make a comprehensive and scientific analysis to find out whether the delinquency of the current member of town council causes the listed environmental problems. Moreover, more detail information is needed to convince us that AG is essentially a better leader than FB, especially when it comes to the environmental problems.
