======================Issue 51======================
【题目】Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.
Nowadays, many college students who graduated from school find jobs that far from their mayor; when asked why, most of them say that they don’t like their majors. If we study four years but just abandon it when we graduated, then what we studied for?
Questions always rise from here. Students in universities usually complain about their major, especially in China, when they were in high school, they know little about subjects and majors in university, and they even don’t know what they would like to learn. That may lead the universities education to be less effective.
This phenomenon not only existed in universities, students in high school or even in middle school are forced to learn something, like science or math, that they don’t like much or even have no interest in. But the fact is if they could not study all the subjects well, including those that they hate, they will have little chance to get into a college. Thus, tragedies happen every year, maybe a genius in Physics who just cannot handle English well, but have little hope to be cultivated to be a scientist.
Based on the facts of education today, it sounds fantastic to make educational system meet every individual needs and let all the students happy to study the subjects which they are interested in. However, does this really work? Or, is this assumption will be the best for all the students?
Every year, millions of high school students graduated to attend the College Entrance Examination; they answer the same paper, test same subjects which makes the examination to be fair to everyone. If educational system designs different study form for every individual, what should be the criteria to assess whether a student is qualified to enter universities? Will that criterion be justice? Will every student be equal treated during assessment? In order to make chances available to every qualified student, the existence of same examination and same educational system is reasonable.
Further more, are all the schools capable to meet every student needs? Apart of universities which have majors to be chosen, middle schools may feel it hard to design difference study systems to different students; for there may be hundreds or even thousands of students in a school. To find out what students’ interests may also be a tough job, for some students just learn what teachers teach without thinking what they really interested in or they may be clever enough to handle all the subjects well. The proportion of those kinds of students talked above isn’t small. Education, in that way, doesn’t need to meet everyone’s desire, may just a few students who do know what their interests are and will be good at those.
To be realistic, educators and critics should consider the conditions of schools and most of students. It will be nice if the education system be more flexible to meet some students’ special needs, may be an after class interest team or may be joining a competition. Forms can vary differently, but all aim at making education more capable to meet all the students’ needs. |
