131. "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
As the distinctly sensitive and thoughtful ones in the society, artists describe world in their spirit, actually reflecting the external world, sometimes obviously, sometimes vaguely. Probably it would take quite a long time that we understand the expression from their heart and soul, which reveals implicit ideas and impulses of a society.
The era of Renaissance, during which so many artists freely demonstrated their talents, to illuminate a new age. It began with the Divine Comedy, written by Dante. This book dramatically expressed critique to the old orders, and the rulers. Then in many fine art works, the themes concerned largely with humanism: advocacy of logical analysis, rights of human beings, as well as supports to centralization and opposition to feudal separation. All these represented need of some rising forces – industrialist, capitalist, merchants and others. They needed freer atmosphere from restriction of churches and kings to develop and trade. Thus, this art movement, seemingly imitating the classic arts, actually acts as a propaganda of capitalists’ values in art and spirit world, indicating the latter great revolutionary surges, namely capital revolution in Netherlands, England, France and other countries took the head to step into a new age
Another tide spurred in the late nineteenth century, and that was Modern Arts. Technology and science did help human beings develop a much better world, but at the same time they concentrated on much on logical and precise thinking, overlooking individual senses. Moreover, academicism date back to era of Renaissance set lots of conservative regulations to artist. Hence, the outbreak of revolution was brought forth by many artist considered as heterogeneous in Paris at that time, like Paul Cezzan. They invited unprecedented themes and style, bravely expresses feelings arises from authors themselves, as Van Gogh did, discarding the confined elements in Academism. Art trends emerged in a great number, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, and the latter Postmodernism. They broke up existing social and aesthetic concepts, and even themselves. Duchamp has composed three works concerning with the famous Mona Lisa in turn: the first one is Mona Lisa with bears; the second one is just bears without Mona Lisa; and the last is sheer Mona Lisa. What he wanted to translate to public is that no authority is not allowed to brake up. As long as his own works became kind of classic, he would overthrow them by himself. Hence, I think the most essential spirit such movement advocated is ever free personality, rights of common people to challenge the existing concepts and values, which is an impulse of society. And today, it has already been somewhat a common principle that arts would die without creativity.
Beside these foregoing movements of humanity and arts calling for liberty, arts also invite reflection, confusion, self-denial. War I made many artists reflect the true meaning of technologies, science, arts and others our modern society get proud of. As they witnessed, all these things brought was effective slaughter and destruction. They became pessimistic toward civilization and development. The title of their movement Dada was the word from the page of a dictionary, at where the knife happened to be inserted by artist’s hands in Zurich, as some say. Demonstrated by such random name, their works were driven to advocate a clear no-rationality, disillusionment, and living style of casualism.
Along with the line of time, we have explored some significant movements in arts. It needs no argue that these closely connected with phenomena, trends, ideas and impulses in society. Hence, as a part of social activities, creation in arts has everything to do with the world we are living, and record implicitly what is happening and what is to happen.
