Ethic is the principles of right and wrong that are accepted by an individual or a social group. Does social customs and ethics are determined by technologies?
In my opinion, technologies what had been treated as the feature distinguished people from animals, actually influence social customs and ethics greatly. However, technologies cannot determine ethics, instead, it is social ethics what ensure that technology development will do advantage to people. The social customs is determined by many factors rather than by only technologies.

To begin with, technologies play an important role in the development of social ethics. Some philosophers share a belief that person is animal which can make tools and use them. Here making tools and using them are on behalf of technologies. From the definition of person in philosophy, we can know how important technology for our society ethics. Without the technology of using fire, we may still be human-like apes rather persons, let alone creating the social ethics today. What is more, with the development of technologies, more and more new ethic issues emerge such as environmental protection and clone and so on. By this way, technologies also influence the social ethics greatly.

However, ethics whose purpose is pursuing the uppermost kindness should be used to guide the development of society rather than be determined by technologies. The ultimate purpose of people developing technologies is making a better society in which human being all can enjoy happiness and will never be disturbed by the problems of diseases, starvation, deaths and wars. However, technologies cannot ensure us by themselves that they will be used to benefit human beings. We need see no further than nuclear weapons which are developed by people just in order to kill each other. Many other problems to some extent due to technologies such as reduction in forest area, extinction of species, water crisis and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to using ethics to guide the development of technology. For example, in 1997 the United Nations passed the Kyoto Protocol, which requires industrialized countries to cut emissions of greenhouse gases to below 1990 levels by 2008-2012. It proves that the society has used the ethic constrain the technology.

Turn our attention to social customs which is defined as usual or habitual practices, there are many factors influence them such as technologies, ethics, traditions, religion and so on. Technologies only play a part to determine social customs. For example, today when faced with parting, people don’t feel as sad as their ancestors did which due to the development of transport and communication technologies. However, many social customs don’t link with technologies. The Christmas comes from the religion and Thanksgiving Day is determined by American history and tradition. They cannot by related with the technologies. Therefore it is arbitrary to assert that customs determined by technologies.

To sum up, the development of technology promotes the progress of society and technologies influence the social customs and ethics greatly. However, the former cannot determine the latter. We should use the ethics to constrain the use of technology as well as make a better world through social customs and ethics.
