TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Did all faculty should do some work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach to improve the quality of instruction at the university level? I strongly agree with it, for this policy can not only improve the quality of the teaching in college, but also help most of the professors and students to know the principle of life.

Firstly, the technology and the science develop very fast today, while the textbooks in college almost stay the same with the past days and do not catch up with the advancement. The teachers should give their students the direction of the future study in their field to stimulate the spirit of creativity in the students, with the ignorance of the closure of the basic knowledge they are teaching. One of the famous practical mathematics specialist, Lin Jiaqiao, was so affected by his tutor Zhou Peiyuan, who is working in a math research team at that time, that he appreciated his tutor's view of the future of the math and went to America to explore this new field of science. The result amazed everyone that he became the founding father of this field at very young age. So we see that the professors working outside the academic world give more knowledge and passion of study to their students, in other words, this improves the quality of the teaching.

In addition, the university is not only an institution of research and education, but also a place of helping the young to recognize themselves and to know the principle of life. If most of the teachers in the college have finished building themselves, their behavior can teach the college students how to be a man. So how can keep the professor close enough to the society and let them finish building themselves? As we all know, the practice is the only to test the truth, so if the teachers do some work outside the academic world relevant to the courses they teach, they would know better about what they are teaching and this practice can also perfect the professors making them thorough social men. When we look back to the ancient days, the great teacher in history were all doing some work relevant to their study, like Plato. Plato actively participated in the social activities while teaching students in the academy. And his influence to his students is overall, from the knowledge of policy and moral to the principle of a man. So the work outside the academy for the teachers really helps the university to reach one of its goals as it is.

Requiring all faculty to work outside the academy for some time is impossible, even in some way, it is a kind of encroaching the right of human. Most of the professors have the strong desire to enrich their life and improve the teaching by working outside the academy, while some do not have that will. Some professors prefer to concentrate on their field rather than do something outside the academy. We should let this kind of professor go on their study because our society needs them. So as to this kind of teachers, we can ask them to teach some more professional courses which are offered to the senior students in college.

Consequently, if we want to better the quality of instruction at college or university level, we should require most of the faculty to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, while let some individuals who persist concentrating on their study go, and give them some other teaching work. And by this way, we can not only stimulate the students' creativity and passion to better themselves, but also help to teach them what is life, how to live a life and how to be man.
