Should students memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts which we can call them tools explaining the facts, as the speaker contends? And students have learned only facts that means they have absorbed very little? I can not deeply agree this topic due to twofold reasons: (1) The facts should be memorized by students and we can not overemphasize the tools helping learn, though it is detrimental without them. (2) Paradoxically,
most of we students prefer to learn only facts.
To begin with, the edifice of science is not based on the pile of separate facts. Instead those tools link the facts to be a well-knitted web. Without them, we just stop our step on the original area. Moreover, science can not promote the development of technology, because no common rule will appear and no considerable experience can be referred. In the contrary, with them, like fish in water, our scientists can conclude the reasoning and create the new theme of research to help human life. That is the reason why our time looks so blossoming. So tools are important, without them there are some troubles.
Admittedly, overemphasis is ridiculous. We can not force ourselves to accept the facts after we own the tools such as ideas, trends and concepts. When the facts came, we should tell ourselves to catch it not ignore it. To some extent, lack of those tools will be the excuse for us not to learn the facts which is truly meaning of learning very little. And sometimes, we learn to memorize the facts firstly as our ancestors did. Ideas, trends and concepts just help us memorize facts more easily and solidly. When we master facts, we also can cultivate our ideas; create concepts and so forth.
What's more, students now prefer to learn factors without tools. But it does not mean they have learned very little. As what was described above, they can learn as their ancestors-by memorize facts and understand its true value to master the rules of this world and bring their experience and thought to their offspring. That all has significant meanings. However we can not rule out the situation that students only want to learn facts for their grade and after exam they forget all of them quickly. It is harmful.
In final analysis, the memory of facts is grave, ideas, trends and concepts can help us to learn it. At the same time, we can conclude them from facts. If we take good advantage of them, we even learn the true value of everything in our life. |
