TOPIC: ISSUE99 - "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superseded by simpler, more immediate options."
WORDS: 561
What will our society be without idea? I suppose there will be a negative answer. Frankly, practical view indeed bring us temporary profit and immediate success more or less, however, if individual, company, or society as a whole want a bright future, idealistic view is essential.
That pragmatic behavior maintains survival is undoubted. As an Chinese old saying goes: how would sweep the world if you cannot even sweep your room?
Practice views and behaviors are often tied with tiny things surrounding related to your daily life, work and choices and according to Abraham Maslow's demand theory, needs are divided into seven levels in which the basic level lies food, water and sexual demand. In that case, no matter how great you are, as a living thing, you cannot be separated with daily life. So is the case in some realms such as business. Businessmen always face issues of deadline, product quota, lawsuit, hiring and firing employers , etc., which is pragmatic problem happening everyday. Everybody knows what if the businessmen ignore these problems, and that will be failure undoubtedly, so practical view brings about achievement or, as someone defines achievement, success.
However, success is never final. As pragmatic behavior may lead you a step higher, without the idea one, supposed as the direction, you will never get to the moon. In politic arena, behavior against moral may maintain your status and win support temporarily, claimed The Prince, written by Machiavelli. However, once these behaviors are open to public, facts in history tells us that there will be a disaster. For example, Nixon, as a US president, installed a typing system in the White House to oversee nearly everyone there, and later when this chicanery was exposure to the public, American government suffered the most significant crisis of confidence, and Nixon became the first US president resigned under great social pressure, such events brings negative influence to not only government but also American society. Some pragmatic view do bring immediate profit sometimes, but idealistic one, often related to moral and civilization, is the precondition to the bigger success.
When it comes to academic realm, I think the combination of practical and idealistic views is the reasonable, balance of which will benefit most. Over emphasis on idealistic view will make you lost in your ideal mind but hampered and confused in your design of experiments, while over emphasis on pragmatic behavior are just repeating of operating skills because you have no ideal with what does every step mean to your next one, just like lost in the forest, using Big Dipper as your compass and your idealistic view. If you always look at the shining stars and want to find the exit, you will be stumbled by stones or hit by boughs; likewise if you fully concentrate on you road and rush blandly, you will just round the area and finally be tired in vain. So it is only by taking care of the road while following the stars can you finally get back home and find your treasure.
Sum up, if there is one relationship between pragmatic and idealistic behavior, it must be that they are all taking action, better than staying and waiting. But if we talk about there differences, I will say, pragmatic views make you keep moving and idealistic one make you on the right direction. |
