When asked about whether every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and to disobey and resist unjust laws, opinions vary from person to person as people's distinctive background and experience. In my viewpoint, obeying just laws and resisting unjust laws have different functions in the operation of a society. While obeying just laws could make the society harmonious and organized, resisting unjust laws would motive the society to achieve great progress on its way to liberty and republic.
To begin with, there are two different types of laws existing in our society, the just laws the unjust laws. Just laws are recognized by all the social members and handed down from one generation to another. Their purposes are to keep the society stable and organized. People who commit crime would be seriously punished according to the just laws and people who have done good things would be praised by the legal system. Since the appearance of human beings, different kinds of law systems have been established to guarantee the stable organization of the whole society. In the ancient time, the legal system is so strict the criminals who kill innocent people would be sentenced to death. With the advancement of civilization, although the death sentence has been abolished in some countries, severe punishment still exists in various countries. It is the responsibility of every citizen to abide by the just laws to keep the society stable and organized. If all the citizens are in pursuit of their personal interest and satisfaction without consideration the legal system, then it would bring devastating effect to the society. At that time, both people's wealth and life are seriously threatened if people disobey just laws.
On the other hand, there are also unjust laws in every society which are used to guarantee the interest of leaders. As we know, it is the leaders who create both the form and content of the legal system and the general public have few influence on it. In order to make great benefits for the government, some political leader would create unjust law without the consideration of its citizens. For instance, some governments charge extraordinary high taxes on its residents to make more money for recreation and other unreasonable reasons. If the citizens would disobey these unjust laws, they would be prisoned. Nevertheless, every individual have their own right in the pursuit of happiness and any unjust laws would arouse great malcontent among them. Consequently, people would take pains in resisting these unjust laws with the risk of lost their lives. With their endless efforts, the unjust laws could be abandoned and reasonable laws could be established, which symbolizes the progress of the society. A concrete example is not very far to seek. China was controlled by Qing Dynasty about one hundred years ago. The emperor made a large number of unjust laws and its citizens live in miserable lives. People began to make efforts to resist the administration of Qing Dynasty. Consequently, the Qing Dynasty was ended and the whole China made great progress. This example clearly illustrates that when people are taking steps in resisting unjust laws, the society also achieve great advancement during this process.
To sum up, from what we have discussed above, we could safely draw the conclusion that every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws in order to make the society stable and organized, on the other hand, the society could make extraordinary progress if its citizens are brave enough to resist unjust laws. |
