40. "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
限时45分钟写完...
In the history of science development, scholars and researchers have achieved great innovations and accomplishment, most of which are nutured under a freedom circumstance. This gives us a lesson that scientists should be allowed to pursue the truth of science so that a veriaty of deciplines can develop. So, should the scholars and researchers be given the freedom to pursue their individual interests without considerting whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society?

Before answering this question, let us take a look at the issue: can we foresee the influence of any research on the larger society? Apparently not. Neither do we have the power to predict the result of research, nor do we have any clue to found out which industry or decilpine will benefit from certain research. Consider, for example, World Wide Web, the greatest creation in tweenties century. At first, it is the invention of some scientists for better communication in their lab. However, as time pass by, the scale of world wide web has extended from the small lab to the every corner of the world and the field of application has ranged from science to bussiness. Therefore, the scholars and researchers should not and can not be concerned with whether larged society could benefit from their study.

Then, the most important and practical factor that should be included in the adoption or abortion of research is interest. Interest has a possitive influence on research in many ways. First, it is the interest that lead the scholars to the field they want to dig further. From outsider to specialist, scientists make their way through knowing basic concepts to study unsolved problems, by the guidance of interest. Second, Interest possesses the magical power that motivite the scientist to discover unknown knowledge on certain subject. Third, scientists bear the pain of lose and put themselves together to continue the study because of the thirst of knowledge that interest them. Without the power of interest, many great findings and inventions might not be discovered or invented by now.

Moreover, making contribution to larger society and studying with the guidance of interest are not multurely exclusive matters. For instance, scientists interested in solar energy are making research on new energy source are benefiting the larger population in environmental sense as well as follow their heart. Some can purposely combine these two goals by better communication with government, environmentist, and those who can find out the useful invention according to the very needs of larger society.

In sum, without interest, one might not study the subjects at the very beginning, not to say making contribution to the society by doing research. Nevertheless, although the result of research is unpredictable, scholars can still do research purposely by working together with government which can find the useful invention on the sense of providing benefits to the society.

TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Under the circumstance of such diversified subjective for researching, we have a strong tendency in turning allowing the researchers and scholars sufficient liberty to decide their own subjective is always effective approach through which the talent and intellect of researchers and scholars could be dug out or inspired. Significantly endowing the right of liberal research is, it can never overshadow the significance of restriction and regulation towards research. In taking various factors into consideration, I reckon that the claim in which the liberty of research is overemphasized would be too vague to be informative.

Admittedly, as is often the case, passions and interests of researchers accepted to be the most impulsive strength for encouraging them to devote in the whole process of research without any extraction and idle, for the reason that one's interests could ignite the courage of researchers to overcome the most sophisticated problems. As a common sense, only the raw interests are the straight forward stimulation for achieving progress in any fields. To confirm this point, one needs look no further than the case of Marie Curies. She lost her mother in her childhood and suffered poverty, so her family cannot support her to study in education institution. However, it was her great interests towards science that promote her to learn hard by herself. Finally, under impulse of her passionate enthusiasm of science, she was get the admission from famous university.

The inherited nature of research based on one's interest poses some problems that hinder the blue print of successful achievement from being reality. Theoretically, sounded as liberal research is, while in practice some impediments such as wasting the talent of our researchers and even non-profitable investment are the fatal elements that make the feasibility of this proposal vulnerable to any questions and challenges. The very meaning of research is to improve the human life standard and promoting the human civilization. In this sense, only the research which is beneficial to human beings was the meaningful and valuable, otherwise it is only a kind of wasting money and talent. To attest this viewpoint, the case of the invention of military weapon was a good example. After the world war two individuals reevaluated the science and technology which brought about fire guns, warship, submarine and even nuclear. These destructive inventions derived from science and technology threatened the peace of our world.

In addition, there is no point to claim that researches based on individual's interest unexceptionally are the most promising one. Indispensable indulging the interests of researchers is, it can never overshadow the advantages of doing researches for contributing the society. Some researches which was designed from the prospective of the requirement of society are also important that cannot be overlooked. To substantiate this point, the case of the exploration of universe serves as an appropriate illustration. Some countries work on exploring the outer space cooperatively such as United States and Soviet Union to discover the available spaces and resources for human. The population explosion and shortage of the resources are the most complicated and urgent problems for human beings.

To bring the idea further, it is unwarranted and sometimes even dangerous for us just rely on the interests of research always effective approach for guaranteeing the morality and legal, as it stands, it can only do part of the job. Some of scientific research was not only influence human dignity but also destructive to morality and legal, which should be banned by regulation or restriction of governments. Extending giving the priority for researching according to one's declination without any restriction and regulation would be deemed to suffer from the huge lost and even great failure. To demonstrate this point, the case of clone serves as an example. Clone was an astonishing and promising technique for conserving human genes, however it was banned by religions and laws on the ground that human clone is immoral and illegal.

To sum up, it is essential for us to restrict the liberty of researchers and scholars for deciding their subjective. The research must be assured to be moral and legal. Every research must contribute to human civilization; otherwise, it is doomed to be meaningless.
