Does a nation's greatness lie in the general welfare of its entire people rather than the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, as the speaker claims? I fundamentally agree with the speaker's claim since the general welfare of all its people is no doubt the most significant label of a great nation. However, we should not underestimate the rulers, artists and scientists’ contribution to the nation.
As a threshold matter, the speaker fails to give the general welfare a clear definition. Over history and nations, the general welfare of a great nation is characterized as a notion comprises of public health, citizen's sense of security, morality, cultural richness, convenience of life and general sense of happiness, that is to say, a high living standard. It is a complex and all-embracing concept and hence it can mirror many aspects of a nation, especially the significant individual achievements. Thus, in order to make sure what make a country great, we need to exam the different sorts of individual achievements.
Few people would deny the importance of rulers, as well as artists and scientists to a nation.Firstly, scientists provide us new technologies which greatly improve our daily lives. We do not have to worry about the food once there is a technology called super hybrid rice created by the Chinese scientist Yuan. And we could communicate with our friends all over the world by telephone which was invented by the English scientist Bell. What's more, we can travel to farther place by automobiles or aircrafts and do not need to withstand the long and boring journey anymore. Secondly, artists’ masterpiece lift human souls, inspire our creativity, imagination, vision of aesthetic and passion for life. It is no uncommon to see that a touching movie or an influential song not only give people enjoyment but also serve to revise the standard of public morality. Thirdly, and most importantly, the achievement of a nation's rulers guarantee that a nation's general welfare. One example aptly illustrate this point involved the distinguished ruler----Genghis. Most European countries which were invaded and dominated by Genghis had much greater resource in art and science. However, the general welfare of their citizen were ruined by Mongolia because of their weak military force and lacking conscious of national security , to be more specific, the ineptness of their rulers. In other words, the achievement of rulers is the very foundation of a nation's general welfare.
In general speaking, individual achievement serves to promote a nation's general welfare, which is an end production of individual success. We should be careful not to judge whether a nation is great or not merely by individual feat. For instance, Genghis empire----Mongolia, conquered lots of countries and almost dominated the whole Europe. Admittedly,Mongolia was indisputably the most powerful nation in the world to some extend considering the horrible Mongolian knights, which are nightmare for all the other countries. However, the boarder domain and stronger military force do not stand for the greatness of a nation and the general welfare of all its people. Extremely lacking in artists and scientists, the whole great empire was only held by Genghis, the unique outstanding ruler. Understandably, the once biggest nation in the world bankrupted immediate upon the death of Genghis. In this light, we should say that Mongolia is a master piece of Genghis rather than a great nation.
To sum up, although the individual achievement is crucial to a nation's development and serves to be a prompter of the general welfare of all its people, we should not take them separately as a yardstick for the greatness of a nation. Moreover, the general welfare is a reflection of individual achievement. In this respect, through individual achievement can we only know some specific aspects of a nation.
