Issue 128"It is often asserted that the purpose of education is to free the mind and the spirit. In reality, however, formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free."

what is education? I think education is a measure to teach students knowledge and made them to use this knowledge into practical. So I agree with the author that the goal of education is to free the mind and the spirit of the students. However ,I don’t think all formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free, on the contrary, some kind of formal education helps us to built up the ability to think systematically and logically.
I think education can be distinguished into two different method . First is to teach students knowledge and theory directly. Second is to teach students how to think and how to learn the knowledge. As an old Chinese saying goes. Giving somebody fishes is not as good as giving somebody the ability to fish., because if you have the ability to fish, you can get it as much as you wish. So does it comes to study, if you have good ability to think deeply and logically and bring what you have learnt into practice, it is easy for you to acquire knowledge and become an effective learner. In a word, I think free the students’ mind and spirit to encourage them to think is more important than directly teach them facts or existing knowledge.
According to the author , Formal education tends to restrain student’s minds and spirits rather than set them free. This will comes to a question:what is formal education? If we define formal education as some kind of intruction which directly put the knowledge and principal into students’ head , then it does restrain students’ mind. Since this kind of education will instill the students with fixed laws ,principals ,and the students will not have the ability to critical thinking. For example, Newton's theory of mechanics, known as classical mechanics, had been considered right for a long time. students who are always been taught they are truth fail to understand that it has boundaries of validity which is revealed by quantum mechanics and relativity.
However, most kind of education does not come this way which is to cramm the idea into students’ minds. Especially it is in the region of high level education. The high level formal education in most universities and institution encourages the students to thinks freely and express their ideas. For instance, a large number of universities adopt discussion as a way of learning. In the interactive process of discussion, students will express their opinion and listen to others’ idea, it encourage the students to think deeply and logically. Another advantage that high level education bring to us is the systematical and logical ways of thinking. In university, we are encourage read a lot of reference books and theory which foster us to build up the ability to collect useful information and transfer it into our own knowledge. all in all, I think the higher education frees our mind rather than restrict it.
In conclusion, I support that education should free students’ mind and spirit. However , some kind of cram education restricts the students minds. But in the realm of high level education, it encourage the students to think freely and logically.
