TOPIC: ISSUE112 - "Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions."
Many educational systems emphasize the reasoning and logical thinking capacity of student because this capacity can help student solve difficult problems. But in fact the ability of controlling one's emotions may assist them more because this can help them living in society.
Admittedly, reasoning and logical thinking is important not only in school but also in workplace. In school, many subjects such as mathematics and physics demand a high capacity of reasoning and logical thinking. Students in these subjects deduce results step by step according to the principles, they are not allowed to omit of skip steps. And often after deduction they can get a definitive answer, not an ambiguous one so that teachers can judge the answer is right or wrong. There is never an answer that in the middle of right and wrong. And in workplace, people always face this condition that they should solve problems by themselves, in this respect reasoning and logical thinking can help them solve problems methodically.
However, emotion education seems also very important in society. First, emotion exchanges can not be avoided. As long as a person living in the community, he must have emotion exchanges with others. Living in society is not just working, not just face machines and computers, people for example, must buy something in market and have entertainments, so that they must communicate with others. And it is said that people alive are to feel existence of others so the communication between people is more frequently than that between a man and a machine. Second, a man being called a man, not a machine because he has emotions and do something directed by emotions, not only directed by rational principles, even if the man is a scientist who studies science all day. Although having develop much in rational thinking, scientists are not except to do things directed by their emotions. For instance, scientific researches usually need lots of investments and to get them scientist should know how to communicate with investors. Clearly, investors are not machines, so a complicated explanation is needed to illustrate the benefits of this study to the investors. And even do so, scientists may not succeed, because it may all depends on the emotions of the investors at that time.
So, to teach student to control their emotions may benefit more to them than only teach them reasoning thinking. But the way of prompt emotions is more difficult than reasoning thinking. As I have said before, emotions such as like love, hate, sympathy are not like rational things, they have no definitely right or wrong. Teachers who teach their student to control emotions the only way is to share experience with them. This method seems primitive but actually this is a good to remedy the lacking emotions because nowadays, parents are usually pay more attention to their children’s intelligence education, they by their children many scientific books but rarely talk to them and teach them how to face the pressure.
In sum, if students were taught how to explore their emotions in school, this practice may benefits them more in social living, because the time that people contact with others is more than that he contact with machines. |
