TOPIC: ARGUMENT169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

In the argument, the speaker asserts that, in order to attract the more gifted professors, they should invest more money to a employment to his or her spouse. The speaker draws this conclusion simply by citing the experience of Broston College. Obviously the conclusion is not credible according to the following raisons.

The experience of studies conducted by Broston College can not necessarily apply for Pierce University. There may be many differences between the two schools. Broston College is located in a small town and the conclusion drawn is also limited to the school in small towns. However the speaker doesn’t mention the situation of Pierce of University. It's entirely possible that Pierce University is located in the center of big city. If so, the professors may not consider that as a good choice.

The speaker has not provided any evidence supporting the conclusion of studies of Broston College.
We don't know how many male and female professors are studied, and what percentages of them claim that they are happier. Without this information, the conclusion of studies is questionable. What's more, the reasons for that they feel happier are not provided either. Maybe they are happier because they are in small town now while they were in big city, which has little to do with the employment offered to their spouses. a good employment for their spouses
is
another important factor. If the offer of employment for the gifted of Pierce University professor cannot satisfy them, they would not come either.

Some other factors for choosing an institution need also be considered such as alchemical opportunities and scientifical conditions. From the experience of Bronston College, the academical conditions are not provided. Perhaps the male and female professor who are willing to work there and feel happier, mostly because
the college can provide them a good opportunities to make academical achievements, which is the most important factor that attracts them. The speaker doesn’t mention the situation of Pierce University. It's also possible that they can’t attract gifted professor, just because the academical conditions there are poor.

In conclusion, before any measures to attract good professors taken, the Pierce University should think carefully the difference between Broston College and itself to decide wheather the experience can be used at Pierce University. Maybe more investment of academicals conditions would attract more gifted professors since generally that's a very important factors for many professors.
