What's more important in various professional and academic fields, imagination or knowledge? While I agree the significance of imagination in discovering new things, knowledge also acts as groundwork when talents achieve breakthroughs.

Great ability in imagination leads to inspiration, which is original source of the emerging of innovations. Depends on innovations can scientists create new theories, inventors make inventions, and authors write new literature works. Without imagination we cannot solve problems when it come to a deadlock, creativity give us possibility to find a new way when we face with obstacles and dilemmas. From light bulb to television, from automobile to plane, from cell phone to computer, imaginations make talents among us invent a myriad of new products and technologies, which have made our lives quite different.

Take a panoramic view of the elites of all kinds of professions; we can easily conclude that most of them have relatively better abilities in imagination than average. In this era of rapid technological changes leading to drastic social competition, imagination has been regarded as an important factor in recruitment and selection held by many enterprises. More and more big businesses are tending to test the level of imagination of candidates in written tests. In fact, imagination has become a key indicator while weighing a person's ability.

However, granted the significance of imagination, we could not overlook that those who can make momentous contribution in given field are also has a great foundation of basic even advanced knowledge of their areas. In physics, a mass of theories' establishment were relied on knowledge system found by previous scientists. For instance, the establishment of quantum mechanics is based on the foundation of classic mechanics, which is recognized as basic knowledge by following physicists. The preeminent scientist, Isaac Newton once said, " If I have seen further than Descartes, it is by standing upon the shoulders of Giants." Having absorbed the discoveries and creations made by predecessors as own knowledge, scientists are able to make further breakthrough.

Without imagination one can hardly breakthrough the restriction and limit at the present time and make eminent achievement in a field. Nevertheless, only having imagination but not knowledge one cannot bring imagination into play at an adequate level and scope, thus all the innovation will become fantasy. In history, the lure of perpetual motion has always attracted inventors: many people kept trying to build perpetual motion machines, but all of them failed, due to the overlook of laws of thermodynamics, which regarded as a universal scientific view. In short, only with both knowledge and imagination can one really make a difference, in any fields.

In summary, if imagination is compared to the key to open the door of achievement, then knowledge should be the stairway leading to the door. With courage to finish the long way can one come outside the door, but with the key can one finally open the door.
