Are the history and previous experience meaningless for people living in the new and complex modern society? In my point of view, no, I believe looking back absolutely help us better understanding of the present and guide us in the future.
Every time I confront problems in my academic learning and life choices, I would call my parents ask their opinions about the dilemma, because I think the fundamental problems about choices and lives changes little from the past to the present. Likewise, history and the past experience are vivid stories and useful direction about how to conduct with the current problems. Americans can't help to stuck in a deep fear when they are reminded the disaster of 911 which acclaim that the safest place turns out a dangerous place as the horrible war field in Mideast. Numerous nations through history encounter the strong fear and sorrow as modern Americans feel about 911, for example, Jews in 1930s faced slaughter of Hitler's fascism, they did fear; Chinese people, who got through the Nanjin holocaust, undoubtedly feel chilly about Japanese's cruelty; and even Japanese people encounter the similar horror after the explosion of atomic bomb. As many problems today are rooted in the negative part of humanities, such as greedy and selfishness. Therefore, looking back to the past provide us comforts and resonance about disasters.
Furthermore, history, filled with how people struggle through the difficulties, assists modern people with methods of dealing similar problems as well as gives them innovations about settling unprecedented messes. For example, economists tell us the development of economy has cycle, which is depression after a booming period. Then, to clarify the economy crisis happened in Greece, Europe, in 2009 and to bring the whole world business back to healthy state, the government administrative, the executives of international bankers or companies will gain a lot of wisdom if they seek for history textbooks--the Asian economy crisis in 2003 and the collapse of Japan's economy in 1996. Because similar mistakes always recur in historical stage, locating the fundamental mistake and learning from the previous is an effective way to deal with troubles in modern society. That's how Franklin Roosevelt, the president of America, successfully saves United States get rid of the Great Depression by adopting the experience of national control economy in Soviet and China.
However, without distinguishing the history fancy from the complexity of modern society, people not only can hardly solve problems but also mislead the trend into a more severe crisis. For instance, the hacking crime becomes more and more striking and wise governments prefer to utilize laws and regulation to relieve such crimes. Because of the new characteristics of Internet crimes, such as easy to hide, severe and widespread results, and hard to find, hacking crime cannot blame to the websites and it cannot be solved by simply emphasizing the civilians' morality, as what do with other mass media. Actually, mechanically applying a theory rarely make sense in flexible and developing society.
In a nutshell, scrutinizing history, people will find insights about the unchanging causes of different social problems and these understanding are significant for the final solution someday in the future. The comforts, provided by history stories, greatly encourage modern citizens and guide them to right directions, though these comforts probably has little practical effects in advances of humanity. |
