It is true that to have knowledge of some other cultures may help to understand one's own culture. Through comparing and contrasting, one can clearly distinguish merits and dregs in one's own culture. But, culture is not enclosed, instead, culture of one nation must involve influences of some other cultures. For this reason, it is hard to find a culture that distinctly different from one's own culture.
To begin with, culture is wide concept that may involves nearly all parts of our lives, all the things no matter material things and spirit things that we created can be regard as culture. So material things like our clothes, machines and transportations together with mental things such as evaluation standards of art works, social systems and even politics, morals and ethics are all called culture. These cultures are easy to be changed; for example, our living style are quite different from that several hundreds years ago. We take bus to work and study while our ancients even did not know what a bus is; we can search information on the Internet while our ancients can only read of things from books. Meanwhile, our spirit lives are also different from our ancients'; our way of thinking, judgment of beauty is far more different from our ancients'.
Why our culture is quite different from our ancients? One possible reason is it have been influenced by other cultures. When searching the origin of the difference, we may notice that these differences are caused by communications of different nations. During communications, various cultures flow into our nation and they may put together to form fusions. The reason why if one wants to truly understand his own culture he must learn some other cultures is that after he does so, he will clearly distinguish the difference among these cultures. And then, he can get out his own original culture from the culture fusions. As a result, he can truly understand his own culture because there is no any influence of exotic culture in this original culture.
However, just because in our day and age cultures of all nations are fusions in which involves influence of some exotic cultures, one can hard find a culture that distinctly different from his own culture. Japanese culture is good example, as we known that Japanese culture is the fusion of Chinese culture and western culture, as a matter of fact, Chinese culture and western culture are similar to Japanese culture.
In sum, to have knowledge of some other cultures may help to distinguish and understand one’s own culture. The process of comparing with other cultures is the process to find the origin of one’s own culture. |
