208The way people look, dress, and actreveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society'sideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people

Definitely, how people of a certain area orcultural background look, dress, and act reveals part of their attitudes andinterests. Costumes and behaviors are two important symbols among the otherentire cultural signatures, however, they are not effective in all thesituations and circumstances. Sociologically, there are many dimensions when weare revealing attitudes and interests of a society and its people.

Admittedly, costumes of people is a vitalfeature of a society, in many communist countries, let’s say North Korea,the costumes of people there are drab in colors and monotonic in styles. Thisis a reflection of its under developed commodity economy. And it’s also aresult of dictatorship of King Jong Ir government, literature and arts are strictlycensored by the dictators and the desires of composing and creating are badlydamaged by brainwashing, artists and writers have to focus on showing theirloyalty to the dictator instead of concentrating on creation. Due to the underdeveloped medical facilities and skills many diseases become comely seen amongits people, they have no approaches to dentists regularly,
as a result, the majority of the people onthis land have a mouth of ugly teeth, that’s almost a national feature and presentto us as a typical look of Korean in the North Korea.

However, in the counties which are famousfor multiple cultures, it is hard to figure out the society’s values and ideasby observing the appearance and behavior of its people since in such societiesboth appearance and behavior of people are various and any simple conclusionwould seems to be superficial in terms of sociology. In the county like UniteStates, Africa-American, Hispanic, and Asian America are living together,costumes and behaviors are so different among these different groups. Trying toconclude the common value and idea among them is meaningless since in themulti-cultural society, researches on differences are more valuable than commonnessfor the former ones are helpful in making people from different cultures livein harmony,.

The echoic of a society is so complicated. Interms of time, different generations have different values and ideas, those whowere born in baby boom are definitely different from their kids in not only looksand dress. As teenagers, their idols are changed from ElvisPresley to Michael Jackson, as grown ups, their conception for marriage changedgreatly too. Moreover, judging a society in terms of wealth, say, people’sincome and how they invest their money , we can also figure out their valuesand ideals. So, appearance and behavior are not the only way we get to know thevalue and ideas of people in a certain society.
