2"Competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society."
归根结底,竞争对于社会是利多弊少。

When it comes to the discussion of competition, people hold different views upon it due to their various experiences and different values. Admittedly, excessive competition may lead to detrimental effects in some cases, such as price war and election fraud. Yet, studies have shown that competition is essentially necessary and it could promote our well-being. On the whole, as I consider, the competition’s benefits outweigh its risks.

To begin with, I strongly support the statement that competition makes progress. In the business area, for the sake of maxim profit, companies have to try to reduce costs through improving technology to enhance efficiency. Meanwhile, in order to contend for most consumers, companies have to produce high-quality products, provide excellent service, and keep prices at the acceptable level. As a result, thanks to the competitive market, better products are presented and more choices are available.

Indeed, there often be wars between companies in the market, which may adversely affect the survival of many small companies. However, it is also a form of competition to elect superior ones. Referring to the theory of ‘survival of the fittest’, if you are not strong enough to context with others, you will be eliminated. Thus, for the sake of survival in competition, every company must continue to strengthen oneself and make improvements.

This principle is not only appropriate to business, but also right for one individual, a group and society as a whole. It may be in the realm of business, sports, and even the process of evolution.

Supportive evidence also can be seen in the scientific process. We all know the severity of competition during the wars, yet, it is in the wars that many new technologies were engendered, such as the invention of atomic bomb, whose original purpose was to defend the country and gain final victory in the war, was a enormous breakthrough of modern technology.

Admittedly, we should not overlook the fact that vicious competition indeed do harm to our society. For example, during the process of election, in the attempt to receive more votes, candidates may present some fraud messages to the public or even take unjust measures to fight against opponents, which seriously threaten the democracy and harmony of society. Thus, when we put much emphasis on the benefits of competition, we had better to remember the fundamental rule that competition should be kept in a fair and just environment. Only in a fair environment that every individual have equal opportunity to develop oneself can the society as a whole attain the maxim efficiency and progress.

In sum, competition offer many benefits, such as contributing to progress and impelling improvements. Besides the advantages competition provided, we must realize its harm in the unfair competition. A fair competition is what we need while an unfair one should be avoided.
