"People should not be misled by the advertising competition between Coldex and Cold-Away, both popular over-the-counter cold medications that anyone can purchase without a doctor's prescription. Each brand is accusing the other of causing some well-known, unwanted side effect: Coldex is known to contribute to existing high blood pressure and Cold-Away is known to cause drowsiness. But the choice should be clear for most health-conscious people: Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex. Clearly, Cold-Away is more effective." In this respect, its relatively lower popularity and fewer shares in the market are understandable and cannot prove the effectiveness of the medicine.

Thirdly, even if Cold-Away is better choice in the perspective of side-effect, the arguer fails to notice that Coldex and Cold-Away can both purchase without a doctor's prescription. If we place emphasis on the feature of both medicine, that is to say, one can purchase them without a doctor's prescription, we can come to realize that the side-effects of these two medicine are slight. For that matter, it is meaningless to judge which medicine is more effective by their side-effects. Therefore, the arguer's conclusion we accept above is open to doubt.

To sum up, the argument is well present, but not thoroughly reasoned. To make it more convincing, the arguer should make a comprehensive survey to make sure that most patients cannot stand on the side-effect brought by Coldex. Besides, more detailed information about the advantage and disadvantage of Coldex is needed.
