50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
The quality of instruction at the college and university level is so much concerned to a point where a wide discussion has been aroused. In taking many factors into consideration, I admit that working experience would serve useful purposes to a certain extent. At the same time, however, it also has disadvantages and limitation. Working outside the academic world in professions does not necessarily promote the quality of education.
It is undeniable that working experiences can escalate the education. Firstly, with the quantum leaps in science and technology, the textbooks are far away from society changes and academic progress. Working outside can add many new developments, technologies and current affairs which are good for enriching the books. Secondly, working experiences broaden the horizon of teachers who have a better understanding about the textbooks and the courses. Thirdly, with combining theory with practice, students get more practical skills and abilities, so when they are graduated, they will meet the job market demand adequately and it is easier to get a good job.
However, going too far is as bad as not going far enough. The speaker overstates the significance of working experiences. Outside works have a bad effect on the faculty. As common sense, everyone has a limited vigor. Since working outside, teachers have to decrease the time of researching and teaching, so they have no much time to prepare the lectures and correcting homework than before. Departing from our initial objection, all these bring detrimental effects on improvement of instruction. For instance, some teachers who are experts in economic, they work for companies and provide advisory, but they can not put their heart and soul completely in the work. It is a disaster for students, so is the university. The essence of college and university is offering a better education, the duty of teachers is fostering students and doing researches. We can not concentrate on the trifles and neglect the essentials.
On the other hand, working outside thwarts academic forward-looking, just as in companies they have assembly-line methods of mass production which relate to mature technology that has been stimulated much times in laboratory. The medical field applies to the same situation, too. If a company wants to produce a kind of medicine, the investigators must test the drugs effects in animals and humans, it has come out in the research. On contrary it is acknowledged that researches should take precedence of production.
Furthermore, in certain academic areas, there is no profession to speak of outside academia, such as pure theoretical fields including mathematics, philosophy, physics, history, it is impossible to directly apply their knowledge to practical work. These sciences seem only to perform well with the brains, providing theoretical basis for other disciplines.
In sum, there are many other factors which are contributing to the quality of education, such as free atmosphere of university, better education equipments and teacher's hard work. Working outside to get more experience is not the only and the most effective way.
