ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
WORDS: 420
TIME: 0:45:00
I agree with the speaker's broad assertion that the most significant events and trends in history were made possible by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten rather than the famous few. However the speaker unnecessarily extends the assertion that the study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. In my opinion, place emphasis on individuals is an effective way to study history, we can pay more attention on groups of people but the attention on famous few is still important.
I turn first to my chief point of agreement with the statement. For example, in a war, numberless of soldiers devotes their life, when the war is finally over, most of their names would be forgotten, and people can only remember the few commanders of the winner. 405000 United States soldiers died in world war II,most of their names have fade out as time past. In fact, without the sacrifice of the soldiers, no commander can win the war by his own effort. In this case we can say the significant events and trends in the war were made by the identities have long been forgotten.
However, even if the forgotten majority is very important, it is not likely possible to study the history through study each person of the group one by one. It will consume much time and many of their experience are very similar. We can learn much details of the hole event by studying each soldier, but they are just fragments, When it comes to a clear vision of how the story happened and effect on contemporary life, we must to study the few administrators who experienced the whole process and make decision about the very single step which decide the trend of it. There is a suitable example to support this point. When we study the 8 years war between China and Japan which began 1937, we must first study Mao's spirits, It's he lead Chinese people to win the war, and his book clearly show us how he deal with each war situation and his dominant idea which led him made decisions and finally effected on the whole war progress. Some of these ideas are still give us great help to deal with the complex situation in the society.
When it comes to the arts aspect, it’s true that no artist can beyond time, the artist's skill and style always affected by the historical limitation. In a sense, art is the consequence of Zeitgeist, the spirit of the times. But the value between a master and a painter is totally different, if you want learn the sprit of art, you must study the best. You can learn the spirit of Renaissance Art trough learning Michelangelo’s work. You can approach the core thought of Pop art by studying Andy Warhol’s art practice.
In sum, we should give more attention on groups of people because they are an indispensable part and a significant impetus of historical tend. While famous few is a insightful clue to understand history.
138"Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
------------------------------
Only太绝对。

"Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education on that also taught them to explore their own emotions."
160"The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
------------------------------
Chairman Mao
26"Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."
------------------------------
