TOPIC: ISSUE37 - "In most societies, competition generally has more of a negative than a positive effect."
WORDS: 610 TIME: 00:52:00 DATE: 2010/7/27 17:14:14
With the development of high technologies and science in present quick-paced society, we can feel high efficiency brought by competiotion everywhere. But how many people feel the negative effect competition brings to us? Maybe we just get used to it and have no time to think it over.
That through competition individuals, companies, factories, and even governments improve their efficiency is undoubted. Becasuse of comparison with counterparts, we can recognize our deficiency and flaws, which will hamper the further development of individuls, groups and society. For example, since China joined WTO, many domesitc companies and factories have faced fierce challenge from competitors worldwide, which own sophisticated management system, efficient production line, and new ideals. All of them cast great pressure and heavy burden to those domestic companies and factories, and this pressure together with burden became the impluse of development with which they can survive, or else they will be washed out by the current of competition. Survey by State Statitics Bureau claimed that since China joined WTO, the whole products of the companies, such as Huawei, Zhongxin, competiting worldwide, have raised over 50 percent. Competitions make a selection in the market as well as society to make the fittest suvive, and this selection is mainly judeged by its efficiency.
However, denying the negative effect of competition to a society is remarkably unaccurate. Through competition, both people and society as a whole place emphasis greatly on the results and materials, rating companies and factories by there profits and products. And this will cause people ignore moral. A German philosophier onced said: Competition is evil. It not only pollute the bule sky over our head but also erode the moral inside our heart. As I paraphrase, competition lead companies to higher efficiency on one hand, on the other hand make them forget their untimately task, creating a better society. For example, the Companies in Japan kills tens of thousands of dolphins only to protect their fish industries because those fish are diet of dolphins, and as a result, some dolphins become their diet, some are selected to play a show, and the left are through into sea, colouring the gulf with blood. In order to maintain their products they take actions polluting the environment, defying law of nature, and threathen ecological system, and it is the very thing we should have a serious think about.
Furthermore, competition is selecting the fittest ones and prise them with higher profits and consumers, and usually those companies and factories own more cutting-edge technologies and resources. As this kind of advantage accumulates, those companies and factories will have an absolutely market seniority and a great share in the market, resulting in their compitors becoming fewer and fewer, and in the end they own the power of monopoly. Monopoly is a complete control of the products in this field and of course they will earn a considerable profit by unrational upbringing their price. This kind of increasing will raise panic among society, especially when the products are essential to daily life, such as gasoline, rice etc. Therefore, over competition is harmful and unequal, because they almost kill the oppotunities of some small companies and factories, also they ban the possibility of a new company or factory.
Taking into a consideration of negative effect of competition, government should promulgate policies and laws to maintain the equality and prevent monopoly, making competition to the tendency of alimorating the society.
Sum up, competition will make a selection to choose the best as Adam Smith claimed, but the negative influence may lead society to unsteady. In order to deaden the influence, relative policies should be made to keep a healthy competition environment. |
