TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

The arguer recommends the dentists who advertise to attract more patients should place emphasis on their anesthetic techniques and careful tender to sensitive patients. To make it more substantiated, the arguer points out the statistics collected from dentists which indicate that men are more likely to faint than women during the dental work. However, this argument suffers from several flaws.

Firstly, the statistics collected from dentists do not lend strong support to the arguer's assumption that men are more sensitive and vulnerable than women during a dental work. Perhaps the number of samplings is relatively small and thus the statistics do not guarantee representativeness. Or perhaps the statistics are only representative of all men living in one local community. Therefore, it is unfair to conclude that all men are more likely to be distressed while visiting dentists. Unless the arguer collected enough samplings and did it randomly, the validity of the statistics is open to doubt.

Secondly, even if men generally tend to be more distressed about having dental work done than women do. There is no evidence indicates that men do care about the pain and nervous they withstand. Common sense informs us that men generally do not care much about pain and other suffering, especially the suffering from a dental work would be relatively slight. Besides, men do not necessarily choose their dentist in strict accordance with the sense of comfortable. In fact, they take make other factors they regard more important into consideration. It is very likely they tend to visit those experienced dentist though it cause distressed.

Thirdly, even if men care about the tribulations they have to withstand, the arguer's recommendation is ungrounded. In the absence of relevant survey, Whether men care about the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and sensitivity of their staff to nervous patients remains unknown. It is possible that most men cannot agree on the price of anesthetic techniques because they consider
such anesthetic techniques are worthless given its expensive cost. It is equal possible that they deem that the careful service from staff is not helpful and necessary at all. Moreover, the arguer fails to explain why men are more likely to faint while visiting dentists. Perhaps women inform the dentist that they cannot stand on the pain by making gesture while men do not. Thereby, more communications between patients and dentists should take precedence over any other concerns.

To sum up, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it more logically acceptable, the arguer has to convince us that the statistics are reliable and representative. In addition, the arguer should make a comprehensive survey to make sure that men do take pain and distress into consideration and they would be attracted by those two factors the arguer suggests.

Despite the validity and reprensentativeness of the statistics, it is very likely that there are more man visit dentists than women. Or perhaps man's ailments are generally severer than those of female given the fact that male tend to drink more alcho and smoke more frequently. Thus they will be treated in a different way which may more easily make patients faint. It is also possible that male and female both are nervous and distressed during a dental work. However, female may express their distressed in some ways other than faint. In this light, the arguer cannot justifiably conclude that men are more likely to be distressed while visiting the dentist.

Secondly, even if men generally tend to be more distressed about having dental work done than women do. There is no evidence indicates that men only concern about the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and the staff's senstivity to nervous or suffering patients. Perhaps most men do not necessarily choose their dentist in strict accordance with the sense of comfortable. In stead, they take other factors they regard as more important into consideration. It is very likely they tend to visit those experienced dentist though it cause distressed. Or they choose an efficient dentist which might save their time.

Thirdly, even if men are only concerned about the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and the staff's senstivity, the arguer's recommended advertising strategy is still unfeasible because it might alienate the female consumers. No evidence indicates that male consumers take most part of the market. Even we accept that female do occupy a little part of the gross market, the arguer cannot guarantee the advertisement will attract more patients. Perhaps men will be also upseted by the advertisement since it totally ignore the need of female. In short, the effort of  the advertisement strategy is positive is open to doubt

To sum up, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it more logically acceptable, the arguer has to provide more detailed information to convince us that male are more likely to be distressed. In addition, the arguer should make a comprehensive survey to make sure that men would be attracted by those two factors the arguer suggests in advertisement and more patients will come to visit the dentists who employ the arguer's recommendation.
