Can a society's values and ideas be told by observing the appearance and behavior of its people? Despite the fact that the way people look, dress, and act could reveal their attitudes and interests in some cases, their apparels and behaviors usually fail to genuinely reflect their inner desires, and this way of telling the society's ideas and values would become unconvincing. The complexity of the society could make it inappropriate for one to express his real idea, while others may just not like to obey traditional ideas and do whatever they like.

Admittedly, people's appearance, apparel and behavior could reflect their attitudes and interests. Their society has certain ideas and values, and year after year, these would gradually affect various aspects in its people's daily life. Every child are born the same, but one growing up in German would notice people around him punctual all the time, and he is most likely to be assimilated and be punctual when he grow up, as other people in the society do. As a consequence, by observing the behavior of an individual could more or less tell about a society's ideas and values. Similarly, the people of Dai, a national minority in China, are used to decorate their hats with peacock feathers. We could deduce that they are doing so to show their worship of peacocks, and that is really the case. In their society's ideas, peacocks are the queen of birds and could manipulate the climate. Consequently, to tell about a society's ideas and values, observing the appearance and behavior of its people would help.

However, the complexity of mankind and society makes it frequent that the way people dress themselves and do things are not reflections of their inner desires. The society's ideas and values are the matter of its people's inner desires, while people's expression could vary from time to time, from one to another. Einstein, the giant in science, proposed the theory of relativity and became known to the world before his thirtieth. In people's ideas, a renowned and respected scientist would wear formally and act prudently, while in fact Einstein is more often spotted wearing casual clothes and wandering in downtown streets. Einstein's indifference in his appearance and behavior did not reveal that his attitude towards scientific research was also casual. The outer expression and inner desire are matters on two different layers, that one may affect but not necessarily determine the other. As a consequence, they way to acquire a society's ideas and values by observing its people's appearance, apparel and expression would be unconvincing.

Moreover, there exist many situations that people cannot do whatever they would like to, and the way they look, dress, and act are incongruous with their attitudes and interests. Usually in certain conditions, in consideration of the interest of a group or the future, one may sacrifice his interest and do things he does not like. An ambassador may be fond of light-colored T-shirt personally, while he has to wear dark and tight Western style suits when he is going to negotiate with representatives from other countries. Another example is that in most businesses, the employees are required to wear working clothes at work, making none of them able to show his interest on his favorite cloth style. Merely by noticing that there are lots of people wearing Western style suits in China and deduce that China is a country with same ideas and values as the Western countries is ridiculous.

In conclusion, the observation of the appearance and behavior of people could serve as a reference to realizing their society's ideas and values, but before one is certain that his observation is the true reflection of people's attitudes and interests, it is too early to tell much about their society's ideas and values.
