153"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
419words/1h+
The speaker alleges that students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. I fundamentally agree with this allegation. It is important and necessary to have a basic skill that finding the truth from a diverse array of information, which is the very element that makes our society advance and develop.
To begin with, knowledge is accumulated generation by generation, but as time goes by, some of which might be determined to be false or not fit nowadays society any longer, while some other might be judged as the truth or reality after the examination of time and practice. Thus one of the most important tasks we should handle is to distinguish the truth from the waste. Consider, for example, if we accepted whatever we are taught, what is the different between us and a machine? How can the technique and science be promoted? Thus we should question what we learn and consider the question ourselves, from this course we learn things more thorough and the whole society would be more advanced for the reason that knowledge has been examined and refined.
In addition, we should question the things that we are taught not only because the knowledge might be wrong, but also because that there might be other answers or views for the question. Different people might have different views, because they are different in races, nations, living conditions and so forth, all of which differentiate the opinions of people. Sometimes, especially in regions such as arts, politics, and sociology and so on, hardly can we get a unique answer or view to a problem. For instance, "There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes", and we should not be restrained by others' opinion and accept it passively. Therefore, it is desirable to question what we learn.
Moreover, through the course of question authority, we might gain experience and help the complement of knowledge. If all of us accepted what we are taught passively without any question to it, the knowledge would not gain even a bit of advance. Copernicus put out sun-centric theory by question the old earth-centric view, Colombo discover the New World by question the old navigate maps. Without these questions, our world would maintain it used to be.
In the final analysis, the speaker catches the very point which promotes the development of society. And we should remember the saying by Aristotle that “Plato is dear to me, but dearer still is truth", by which makes our society more colorful and splendid.
