131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
Art is a valuable treasure of human civilization, it makes a tremendously contribute to the development in our society. I reckon that the arts such as paintings, music, literature and so on, reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society. Moreover, it is most likely that the arts reflect the popular ideas of society at that time and the emotion and feelings of the artists themselves which are unique, special and creative.
Admittedly, the arts could reveal the hidden ideas and impulse, which common people do not recognize. For example, the form of expressionism is very typical which we can call cultural criticism. That is, artists take a stand against certain practices and ideas in the society that they thinks that they are unjust and inequality. American famous photographer Sherry Levine has used grotesque images of women for the purpose of fighting against the oppression of the female gender by American advertising, law, and social custom. The French critic Charles also wrote that the artist sees what his fellow citizens can't. So during the age of tremendous society change, artists could use art to agitate for this change.
Moreover, the arts reflect the dominant and popular ideas and pursuit. Renaissance was a culture movement that profoundly affected European intellectual life. The artists focus on the theme of everyday life and humanism, realism and emotion instead of excessive worship of Christian and deity. Dante's famous book Commedia is about the darkness and vitality in the Middle Age of Europe, he is converse to deity of God and a forerunner at the age with the effort in competition with early classical writers. One of the famous artists in Italy at that time is Leonardo De Vinci, his works such as Mona Lisa and the Last Supper all exhibit his attention to humanism but not the God.
Furthermore, to large extent, the arts are a unique style and personal creation of the artists themselves. The arts need freedom, passion and unique ideas to improve their development. So there are so many styles and forms to reflect something which are very different from the whole society's thought.
If the artists are not the craftsmen at the service for the government and leaders, they just show their special feelings, emotions and the thought of life, under this situation, it does not matter that whether the reflect ideas are hidden or displayed. For instance, Claude Monet is one of the founders of French impressionist painting, his famous painting Impression, Sunrise reveals his individual emotion and idea that artists should express one’s perceptions before nature. I think it has not so much relation to the local society.
In sum, although the speaker's claim that art works reflect certain ideas and impulses of a society bears some merits, the speaker overshadows others that artist can reflect other dominant ideas, what is more, the artists' themselves. All these play relative indispensable role in society and promote the development of art itself. |
