153"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively." ------------------------------

I fundamentally agree with the broad assertion that students should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. However, the opinion that students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study is too absolute. Always keeping independent thinking is a precious characteristic during the learning process, it’s unnecessarily to be a skeptics.

Firstly, without suspicion to known knowledge foundation, there would be no progress of human being's cognition. An old Chinese saying goes: It is better to have no book, if you to believe and take the entire book for granted the entire book. One of the proper examples of the fact that an authoritative theory might not be right is the progress of heliocentrism. As we know, the earth-centred view dominated European science until the seventeenth century, when Copernicus' and Galileo's began to overcome the ideas of the church. Without the question to the authoritative, it’s hard to imagine the state of modern astronomy. An other suitable example is the discovery of the circulation of the blood. Many researchers devoted their life because their new theory conflicted with religions and theology, the recovered patient of cardiovascular disease should appreciate the researchers who insist their own opinion rather than accept the theory already known.

On the other hand, it is unnecessary and arrogant to question all the knowledge whatever we study. Suspicion could be stepping stone in the way of pursue truth, since it always make us stop and check out the obtained achievement. The cognition of contemporary generation is based on the great heritages of former generation, which has been building up over time and with constant accumulation. The success we enjoy today and the vision that we have for tomorrow only exists because we have been privileged to stand on the shoulders of giants. It’s a waste of energy to suspect everything make a fresh start when we study, actually, many masters indicate that they obtain help from history and experiences of former experts. Take Le Corbusier for example, he is renowned as a pioneer of modern architecture, however, contemporary scholars found there are countless prodigious connections between class architect. One of the obvious example is his Villa Savoy share the same modulus with Villa Rotonda which was designed by Palldio in 1550s. Corbusier’s book also mentioned he was seeking inspiration from great Turkish mosques of Constantinople which were built hundreds of years ago. Another master of modern architect, Louis I. Kahn also held the experience that travel in ancient construction sites. It is said that he found his inspiration from Acropolis.

In conclusion, in the process of studying, the most important thing is keeping the independent thinking rather than suspect everything. Absorb the knowledge accumulated by predecessors and perfect them is the ultimate goal of study.

[To be like the "Man of Zheng buying shoes"- to only believe books - you might as well not have any books.   就像“郑人买履”那样“尽信书”,真不如无书了。 现有的可查阅的资料是这样表达的 ]One of the proper examples of the fact that an authoritative theory might not be right is the progress of heliocentrism.
