In the information age, how to improve the quaility of education is a big problem the colleges and universities face. The speaker gives us a solution that all the faculty should be required to work outside their own academic area. In my opinion, this would be a good idea to solve the problems.
As I mentioned above, today, the world becomes a information society which is full of kinds of information. And in the information age the knowledge and information changes faster than any period before which need us to grasp the knowledge faster than before. Another problem must be considered is the students are different with different backgrounds, knowledges, interests and learning styles. Each student should be treated individually. But, our current modes provide little individualization. So, in my opinion, the college and university should improve the quality of instruction.
However, how to improve the quality? The speaker gives us the idea that I partly agree with. I believe that most faculty should spend time working outside the academic world they studied. But some faculty should only study their academic area which need to stay in the lab to do experiments. Firstly, in the modern society the different disciplines interact each other. Some disciplines, such as economics, have great relationships with other disciplines. I will take the example of economics. Economics onece was a discipline only need the economist think. But today it becomes a discipline which has great relationship with the mathmetics, poltics and statistics, in fact. Every invention in those disciplines can influence the economics theory. For example, if we want to forecast the variations of the exchange rate. First of all is to know what happened in the world recently. Second of all is to calculate how the facts influence the exchange rate. At the end can we forecast how and how much will the exchange rate change. Secondly, the education should be suit for individual case and be designed for the tendencies of times. These need the teachers to acknowledge the students' needs and the tendency of the discipline development. If a teacher know the tendency of the discipline development and the pragmatic technology well, the knowledge he teaches will be more pointed to the society. At the same time, the quality of education would be improved. So at these points I agree with the speaker that the faculty shoud spend time working outside the academic world in perfessions relevent to the courses they teach.
However, sometimes the speaker's suggestion maybe infeasible because some disciplines are not need to grasp the knowledge of other disciplines. Especially some science department which only need the teachers and students to stay in the lab to do the experiment. The chemistry is a good example of this. A student who study the chemistry must do enough experiments to find the relationships between kinds of chemical element. Without these experiments he can not grasp the intension of chemistry.
In conclusion, I believe that some faculty should work outside their own perfessional area to improve the quality of their instruction in the college and university level, but not all. Some should stay in the lab to make experiments to search the secert of the universe.
