ISSUE144 -"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lastingvalue."
*a person whoevaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
总共546字,思路:正反反, 先讨论artist的作用,再分析speaker不认同critic的可能原因,最后说明critic的好处
I fundamentallyagree with the speaker's assertion that it is the artist who gives societysomething of lasting value for through the appreciation of the great artisticworks, people's mind can be cultivated and we will learn much of the customs inthe past. However, it is specious to decry the contribution of art criticswhose sharp observations, unique understandings and talented analytical skillsconduce to the lasting of value. In my point of view, both artist and thecritic are indispensable for giving society something of lasting value.
As a kind ofsocial ideology, art plays an important role in molding people's temperamentbesides its function of education and cognition of esthetics. Originated fromlife but superior to life, art is the comprehensive reflection of all walks oflife in the creation or reproduction of the artists. The vivid artistic imagesallow us to recognize various social customs in different places across thelong history. From Garcia Marquez’s magnum opus-One Hundred Years of Solitude,we catch a glimpse of the underlying pattern of Latin American history; The fresco,Leonardo da Vinci’s “the Last Supper” depicts an ethic attitude towards lifewhich involves the reverence of life, the enthusiasm of justice and the pursuitof truth; Hearing Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies, it is as if we are gatheredwith the native western Hungary and enjoyed their folk music. The empathy offeelings between the artists and the appreciators makes it likely that art’svalue lasts permanently.
One possiblereason that the speaker disregards the art critics result from the worries thatsome outstanding artistic works may not be recognized by the contemporarycritics. However, reflecting on this reason makes clear that this misgiving isactually unnecessary. Under most circumstances, the great artistic works arerarely submerged in the keen eyes of the professional art critics. Even if itis in a style not yet understood or favored, it will be recognized by thecritics some day in the future and brilliantly revived of its value definitelyas the history has showed too well. The current problem is not the criticsdegrading splendid works but that the art circles lack qualified professionalcritics with deep discernment to discover and popularize the great arts.
Actually, inaddition to the artist, the critic-people specialize in evaluating art-also conduceto the development of art, thus serves as an important factor in providingsociety with something of lasting value. Their written critiques, or reviews, are published in newspapers, magazines, books and on web sites, which largelypopularize the basic knowledge of arts and help the average people to achievebetter understanding of arts. Some critics even promote new art movement which canbe typified by Roger Fry, the first figure to raise public awareness of modernart in Britain, and gave the name Post-Impressionism. Without these critics’ efforts, the marvelous works are more unlikely recognized by layman. Therefore, it ishasty to allege that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives societysomething of lasting value.
To sum up, thelasting value of arts depend on both artists and critics whose functionsupplement each other. As time passed, the greatest works are those which arecreated by talented artists and popularized by insightful critics who drawpeople’s attention to them.
