Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Newspapers and magazines are the best ways to learn about a foreign country.
Newspaper and magazine provide enormous information about the world around us. They facilitate people to keep up with the pace of modern society. However, the claim that they are the best ways to learn about a foreign country needs further discussion.
How to learn about other countries? I believe the process is not simple and effortless. Mostly, people are fascinated by the splendid scenery or the romantic atmosphere of the country first. The Lavender Fields in France and the Statue of Liberty in America have driven tens of thousands of people to the destinations. After people appealed by the country's landscape, they desire to know everything about the place- its history, its tradition, its food and so on. What's more, people who are interested in a country will pay attention on its current news and circumstances, such as its business and political situations. Therefore, to learn about a country, one may be familiar with its landmark, its tradition, its history and its current conditions.
Newspaper and magazines are expert at offering the information of history and current situation. They report the political, business and social condition of the world, such as the spill of the oil well in Gulf of Mexico and the insurgent attack in the Afghanistan. They transfer information so instant and concise, making people easily absorb the message. However, they are not omnipotent. Most information they provide is abstract, even with some pictures to illustrate. Readers have to build up a framework or a process in their brain in order to understand the words. Even though the article depicts the country to be very spectacular, readers have to imagine by themselves.
Fortunately, TV program can make up this defect to some extent. Unlike the static message of newspaper and magazines, TV program presents a dynamic and vivid picture of a country. Moreover, it can depict the vista and also the details using the particular angle of camera. One of my favorite TV programs, the King of Adventure, is a perfect example that how the TV program can attract people's attention and transmit the culture of a country. The host of the program always lives together with the local residents, doing what they do and eating what they eat. It really helps to present the culture and tradition of a place and teaches me a lot about a foreign country, not only the incredibly beautiful landscape.
Nevertheless, I strongly believe that the best way to understand a country’s tradition is to travel there by oneself, rather than passively absorb the information of any type of media. I went to the Northeast of the China in a summer vacation. I knew the traditional table manner in northeast China through the meal that the plates should be big enough to show politeness. That trip left me a deep impression and taught me the customs of the north part of my country.
