ISSUE184 - "It is a grave mistake totheorize before one has data."

Is it a grave mistake to theorize before wehave data, as the speaker contends? Though I have to admit that a theorylacking supporting data is always a weak one, the researching method of theorizinghas its merits. And a balance should be made between searching for adequateevidence and drawing a conclusion.

There’s no denying fact that the data ofthe research lays the foundation for convincing researching results. Data, frommy point of view, is what best explains the reality of a certain subject. Withdata only, the researcher will be progressively guided to the truth. The datagives the scholar an in-depth insight in to the events and provides him with detailedexplanations of the research. On the contrary, a conclusion drawn withoutsupporting data can be only called the observer's assumption, rather than thereality of the fact. The conclusion draw in that way is seldom convincing, forit fails to depict the big picture of the research and it may oversimplify thecomplicated situation. Consider, if a scholar domain in history draws theconclusion at the first place and then looks back for supporting historicaldetails, the involvement of personal insights dooms it to fail to represent thehistory. In short, it is risking theorizing before we are provided withsufficient data.

Yet, it is a vital step to theorize in theway of seeking for truth. The data shown in the experiment seldom explains thefact itself. It is the explanation, or theorizing, that makes a researchmeaningful. Only after a thorough analysis, conclusions can be drawn by theresearchers and the result will be useful. In my opinion, the interpretationfar outweighs the data itself. However, even provided with the same data, theresearchers explain the fact in totally different way. But it comes no surpriseto me. Common sense tells me that people's ideas vary even towards the samething, and it is also the case with research in any realm. Some additionalpersonal objective ideas added by the researchers will affect the outcome, thusmaking the result personal. Thus, admitting that the data is vital to theresearch, we should not ignore the process of interpreting the data andinterpret it by sticking to it.

Though making a conclusion before we havedata is fallacious, it has merits when it comes to areas that is too abstractor too large. Consider the research into universe, an area that is so large totake a direct research. Researchers always need to set some molds to mimic theuniverse in order to make it shown in a more direct way. And researcher makes awild guess with the limited data; theory was firstly assumed by the researcherand later examined in a certain way. It helps the researcher to ease theresearching process.

In the final analysis, both data and theprocess of theorizing are vital in the research. Data helps to discover theresearch result while the process of theorizing gives explanation to the data.It is fallacious to draw a conclusion before we have fully analyzed the data.In addition, it worth a try when it comes to areas, that are too abstract or toolarge.
