TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

The president recommends a course reform and more job counselor hired in order to help graduates employment merely based on the comparison of Mira Vista College and the nearby Green Mountain College. However, he fails to carefully examine the real meaning of the percentage and alternative reasons for their different employment ratio with Gm College. And also he ignores the distinction between the two colleges which may cause the imitation into question.

Firstly, whether the employment of MG College is higher than that of MV College in fact is not sure. As is asserted about, the 70% employment in MV College is only concluded from who informed the placement office. It’s possible that many students who find good jobs did not inform and only those who have difficulty in job searching informed the placement for help or just to complain.
And only 50% of them find jobs in their major field does not mean it is a bad thing. Maybe they don't like their major and prefer job irrelevant to their majority. In addition, there is no evidence about the total of the two colleges which lead the comparison of percentage to be unconvincing.If the MV College has three times as many students as the GM College, then the total graduates employed of the former is much higher than that the latter.

Secondly, even we concede the GM College is better than MV College in terms of employment, there is no evidence that high and excellent employment of GM College result from more business courses and more job coursers. There are many alternative reasons which should be taken into account. For instance, it’s likely that the overall quality of GM College is outstanding and it has a good reputation among prospective employers which alone may increase its graduates' employment opportunity. And in addition, business courses just work well for those business related graduates, and job coursers are only helpful for those who have qualified ability but awkward to show up. Just imagine a senior graduate majored in medicine, does he need any knowledge of business to apply for a hospital? Definitely not. And suppose a mediocre graduate who knows nothing about required technical skills, there is little possibility that he will find a good job even with 10 job counselors' guidance on resumes and interviewing skills.

In conclusion, before adopting the president’s suggestion, the college's board of trustees should carefully consider the problems mentioned above. Whether they do have a low employment in fact? If it's true, they should also exam other aspects besides the two listed by the president. For example, they can interview their graduates especially those who have difficulty in job finding to assure the real reasons. Does their college have an unreasonable course arrangement? Is there some out-date majorities which will definitely face the awkward condition that graduation day is unemployment day just because they cannot satisfy the society needs? Have the college pay enough attention to fostering students' ability to communicate and cooperate with others which is of critical importance in this era? Questions like these should be checked and analyzed circumspectly. Only by suiting the remedy to the case can the MV College truly help their graduates find employment.
