In modern society, the vocations are varied dramatically, there are some vocations require one's imagination and creativity, but there are also some vocations require one's knowledge and skill. Consequently, I agree with the speaker's claim insofar that in some professions and academic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge. However, we must also be aware of that under certain circumstance, the knowledge, skill and capabilities in other respects could be more crucial.
In the first place, I must concede the importance of imagination. We realized that imagination is the original power for us to study the unknown world and we placed greater emphasis in developing our children's imagination, and this consciousness becomes more and more acceptable for adults. For instance, the science fictions always imagine the life style we will have in the future. When the first time Asimov pictured the images of robots in his fictions, the people find it unbelievable and fascinating. Nonetheless, today, with the development in science and technology, robots flood everywhere in our daily lives exactly the way Asimov described many years ago. In this way, it is the imagination that points out the way we should go and helps the human make great progress.
However, usually, the knowledge is the foundation of success in academic field, and one can hardly tell which one is more important. As far as I see it, owning knowledge can make one become a common professor or normal scientist, whereas, qualified with the characteristic of imagination can make a professor become a great scientist who will be memorized in our history. For example, Edison once remarked that (and I paraphrase): "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percents perspiration." Although, the inspiration is extremely significant, if the giant scientist like Edison spent no time on studying the expertise and failed to conduct thousands of experiments, could he ever be succeed? Therefore, I believe the knowledge determine the stability of a scientific building, meanwhile, the imagination hinges the height this building could reach.
Additionally, to estimate people's value in their professions, we cannot fail to consider other aspects aside from imagination and knowledge. For some vocations like workers in assembly lines, practice make perfect, and they might not need to manage a lot of knowledge or imagination. For them, it is their outstanding skills contribute to our society. Moreover, in some other field, the experience is what we are most badly in need of. Like the judges in courts, they suppose to have a tremendous wealth of experience dealing all sorts of lawsuit. Consequently, as I have analyzed above, there are also many professions wherein some other qualities are playing the leading roles.
To sum up, in the academic field, I believe the knowledge is the foundation of instructions and researches, and determines the stability of them. Oppositely, the imagination could hardly mean something without the foundation of knowledge, and however, with the help of knowledge, imagination can be seen as the key to open the door of success. Aside from imagination and knowledge, we should also be aware of that there are some other characteristics and they are playing the leading roles in many professions. Hence, I can only partly agree with the speaker’s claim. |
