In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasingly life complexity and psychological displacement, people in nowadays call for a better education service in order to gain greater good for themselves and their children. In this topic, someone argued that the education will become truly effective only when it is specifically designed to satisfy the individual needs and interests of each student. Well, at the first glance, although this claim might seem plausible, with more reflection on it I believe it is in fact ill-conceived and ignores some practical problems, so i can not agree with it for the following reasons.
Initially, the education among the persons with different needs and interests, can hardly designed in a certain way that satisfy everyone. On the one hand, it is a practical problem that, the resources of education, such as faculties, schools, classrooms, text books, as well as the curriculums, all of which are limited and impossible to serve everyone by their individual requirements and interests. On the other hand, if the education designed in that way mentioned in the topic, which would sure to be an extremely colossal task and hardly can be suffered by any educational constitutions and our society. Furthermore, the government has to invest great amount of money, labors and time into the construction of a new education system, which has also declined the effective of our education. So it will be impossible and irrational for us to make the education meet everyone’s need and interest.
Subsequently, meeting the individual needs and interests of each students is not necessarily advantage for our education especially when the education in high schools or lower level educations. For the young students, there are few genuine interests or intentions of them and they are required to achieve many basic knowledge and certain subjects. As a pupil in primary school, who must manage to handle some indispensable knowledge and techniques, such as calculating, writing, reading, as well as the ability to communicate with the others, these basic ability will work as the foundation of their advanced studies. In order to reason this idea clearly, let's take a look at the following representative instance. So if a little boy said: "i don't like math, i am interested in basketball and i want to become a basketball star in the future!", that would be crazy of parents or teachers if sent the little boy to play basketball instead of letting him accept the normal education.
However, we have to admit that, for the undergraduate students or the graduate students in higher levels as who concentrate on experimental research, it would be better if the university could offer them more choices in both the way and the content they prefer because the method and resources of education they need is different from each other. In this level, students have relatively developed quite a lot and they need to specific in a certain field. The university or the other educational constitutions should provide more time and laborites for a graduate student to focus on one’s research or offer more opportunities to the MBI students to practice their learning and technologies in the real commercial condition. I believe only by this method that provide particular resources and environment to different students of various field can they develop further, because the environment and approaches they need for their senior development is wholly different from each other.
In sum, the controversy describes the dilemma faced by many educators and parents today--whether the education should satisfy each student’s individual interests and needs. According to the discussion mentioned above, although it seems that the dilemma still exists, it is not difficult for us to draw the conclusion that, on the one hand, the designation of the education can not fulfill everyone’s needs and interests because there are so many practical problems we can not neglect indeed. On the other hand, the specific designation for individual interests of each student should depend on the level of the education one has. For a young student, there is not so much need to consider the individual interests because the young have to achieve a lot indispensable knowledge. While for the senior level students, we’d better to offer more choices in order to satisfy the different requirement for their further development. |
