TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."

There is much controversy over the issue of whether an effective leader should maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. Due to the different conflicting values from different people, some people claim that good leader should possessed highest morals. However, as far as I am concerned, effective leaders may not the people who always obey to the ethical and moral standards.

Looking back to the human history, we can see many great leader who got outstanding achievement in politic, however, committed of the moral problem. For instance, F.D Roosevelt ever had underground love with three women in his career, but people can’t deny his great achievements when he occupied as the president in America. It is his voracious appetite to the knowledge, unyielding mind to his crippling illness and smart policy to economy won his permanent fame. In addition, commit of the moral problems are sometimes inevasible for the effective leader such as the diplomatic official in one’s country. As we know, To uphold the interest to the country, the diplomatic officials are always need to keep secretes and even tell lies to public. To some extent, we have to admit that they violate the ethical and moral standards, however, we still consider these people are the effective leaders.

As the great German poet, Goethe once said: " Man errs as long as they strives."
Everyone will inevitably make mistakes in their lives. In my opinion, we should consider one's other characters such as intelligence, erudition, and efficiency while we judge whether he or she is an effective leader. However, one who possessed higher morals may easier to get recognition from others while one who ignore the ethic and moral is doomed to fail. For example, even though Adolf Hitler, who once was highest ruler in German, owns the ability of eloquence, staunch and persistence to be an effective leader, he ignores the moral and ethic that initiate the World War two in 1939. Consequently, he lost in the wars and left an inerasable spot in the history.

On the other aspect, one who maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards may not become an effective leader. For instance, Confucius, who was the founder of education in China always propagate benevolence in feudal era. Even though his suggestion won high evaluation by our offspring, he didn't get any recognition at that time since all the emperors were intended to dominate other countries and unify China. As a result, Confucius didn't get much achievements on his way to striving to be an political leader. Thus, in my opinion, highest moral standards are not the one of the most important characters for one to be an effective leader.

In sum, people who ignores the moral standard or always take it as the first place may difficult to become a successful leader. To possess the effective leadership, one should consider importance of moral standard in different situations and in the meantime, own the excellent characters such as eloquence, staunch and persistence.
