faithful followers may reject to follow an ordinary person, but not a admitted "god". The example of Watergate exemplifies it perfectly. After find the honored president was not confident so that to do some cheating, the 49 states of the 50 states which supported Nixon, chose to abject him without reconsidering. In sum, to gain the support of the public, the future leaders have to dress themselves decent, at least satisfying the followers' values, which is the fundation of to be an effective leader.
