TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

Nowadays, there is a debate about whether artist is more important than critic for the society and the author claims so. The author’s conclusion very limitations, in my opinion, both of them are big vital for this society. Artists give us a beautiful world and critics offer an eye for us to discover beauty, each of them is dependents on others.

To begin with, it is the artist's creative work that provides people with masterpieces that characterize our society and enrich our spiritual life. Works of art are generally based on life and reflect people's emotions in the society, and that, an artist's work bring the influence and impact to society is enormously. For example, Pablo Picasso, the contemporary western most creative and influential artist, who created numerous great artworks during his lifetime, specially the famous Guernica, which expresses a terrified circumstance through the Second World War. It is important that Guernica is not only a beautiful artwork on the surface, but also represent the people lived so miserable at that time. Until today, this picture is one of the most valuable work in art world, even it has far- reaching effects all around the world.

Nevertheless, some artworks are too extraordinary for common people to comprehend, then critic is an indispensable factor for this kind of situation. Critic can help us understand and interpret art, because great artist are often ahead of time and well beyond the comprehension scope of the mass public. For instance, Monet’s famous work Impression: Sunrise was not understood initially, since it seems peculiar for a large amount of blue was used as the major color for sunlight. However, this work eventually earned its reputation and led to the name for impressionism. What caused it such a big change? A large extent is that it attributed to critics, who used their unique vision, let us to know a special world.

However, because critic have the similar feeling like us, they often turn their subjective emotional to art criticism, so they sometimes has a misleading influence on us, denying the value of some outstanding works. A strong evident is Van Gogh, who often could not received contemporary appreciation, during his lifetime, he was not approved by the people at that times, many critics think he was just a crazy, which almost defamed a great artist. He created impressionism on painting, which was accepted many years after his death.
In sum, this society needs artist who could create more special artwork, and also needs critic, if the jade can not appreciate by people, then it is only similar as a common stone.
