The claim that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value is ill-considered since it overlooks the significance of critic who evaluates works of art and makes standards for people to recognize which kind of work is valuable to enjoy. Therefore, I don't agree with such declaration.

Admittedly, artists enrich our mental life by illustrating us meaningful presentation of art. A good novel can not only improve our feeling of belongingness to our greatest language but also bring us to reach an inner peace and stimulate our intelligence. A meaningful film will make us come to realize the everlasting value of lives and love. The thought behinds it is always inspiring and thus will have great influence on our life, from the way to treat others to the approach to think of ourselves. The passion conveyed in each kind of music deeply impresses us and thus affect us positively. When the earthquake in Sichuan took away such huge number of lives, the song "Till the End of Life" encouraged millions of people to fight together against the disaster. Undeniably, art makes our world colorful and gives out hope, inspiration and love.

However, it is the great contributions that a skillful critic made that uncover the mysterious mask of art and make it accessible for us. Sometimes art seems to be too abstruse to understand. By learning from the criticism, we know that which painting is beauty or not, by being informed of the hidden meaning behind it which actually animates the work.. By the comments of one film, we realize that what the director want to impress us in fact through the story. By revealing the singer’s life, critics give us a better understand of his or her song. Why he or she sing it with a loud or low voice and through it what him or her want to present, happiness or sadness. All these works of exploration of the deep value below the appearance of the work of art is very essential.

It is the critics who prevent us from being affected by those passive impacts that some forms of art may have. As we all know, not all artists have positive attitude towards life and may vent their feelings through their works. Those works may have passive influence on us such as be suspicious to life or others around, be violent or choleric, or even be antihuman. At this moment, critics can keep those works from spreading our by objective critique.

It is the critics who impel the delivery of those brilliant works of art. Just think of ourselves, what makes you be willing to watch a film or read a novel? I have reason to believe that it is the suggestions of your friends or some recommendations in some articles or even some advertisements on television that makes you take such actions. These sources of advices just play the role of critics, to influence someone to do or not to do something by making their analysis of it.  Therefore, critics are necessary for the spread of art.

In addition, we should be conscious towards some critiques since nowadays not all critics will make accurate comments. There are too many factors to be taken into consideration, such as fiscal profits that a selective analysis may bring to the critic, personal inclination towards special artists and so forth. However, these factors still can't shake the significant role that the critics played in our spiritual world according to what I have discussed above.

To sum up, both artist and critic are essential to giving society precious mental treasures which are of immortable value.
