221"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."
Along a long history river, we come from primitive society, through slavery society, then, feudal society, to now, capitalism or socialism society. Everything is changing and today is so much different from yesterday, let along long long ago. So, to some extent, I cannot agree with what is said in the statement above, for I personally hold a view that everyone is unique especially they live in different times. However, in a not dissimilar way, I also agree there are some things still remains the same as before, and will be in the same, at least similar way forever. As it stands, it is hard to say are there really significant difference between us and our ancesters.
It is not to deny with the development of our society, our life is becoming increasingly convenient. We have TV to get the latest information of the world; we have telephone to communicate with anyone we want no matter where he or she is(of course we should have others’ phone number); we also have the most important tool------computer, or how can I take the test by this way now? But for our precendencors, they might never think about this, they can only write letters when they want to get connect with their families or friends, which would take a long time for this kind of communication, or worse, the letter may be missed so two persons had no chance to reach each other forever. In this way, we are definitely different from what people are in the history.
But, as far as I am concerned, what is different is only on the surface. No matter how rapid our society is advancing, no matter how developed our life is, I strongly believe there are something called spirit will never change. Since long ago, our ancestors are admiring peace, Olympic Games, which has been hold since 776BC to stop wars, is still the most important sports meeting around the world, showing our people now is also adoring peace. This is quite ture on the question of freedom, too. Almost every country in the world protects citizens’ freedom in law clearly. What’s more, other virtues, such as loyalty, kindness, love for ones’ country etc. are shared by both the modern world and our forefathers so far and perpetually. As I see, what is the essencial part of human beings is just this kind of things.
However, what remains the same is not only the mores, but also other thing in several aspect. As for science, Newton once said “If I have seen furture, it is because I stand on the shoulders of the gaints’”, showing scientific research must be based on the forerunners’ experience, which to a certain extent implied the close linkage between ancient science and today’s. Scientists hang down their results generation by generation, including their persistance and creativeness. As for liberal art, the philosophy of Socrates, the theory of Confucius, is never giving up their use as a director of today’s life. Their thoughts are accepted all through the world, applied to solve problems in the reality, which seems unbelievably fascinating. As for The Second World War, people come to the conclusion that wars are of no good to the whole world, even in today, it will still bring a lot of sufferings and tragedies. Historical experience can be borrowed by us to decide
the war going forward tells us there must the same factors in the old times and now.
Whatever else said about this, difference and similarity always exist at the same time, people would never come to the answer whether people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history. For the standard to judge difference also differ in everyone’s heart. And in my heart, the chief benefit of the study of history is not to break down any illusion, but to help us pave a way to a brighter future.
