221"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."

Along a long history river, we come from primitive society, through slavery society, then, feudal society, to now, capitalism or socialism society. Everything is changing and today is so much different from yesterday, let along long long ago. So, to some extent, I cannot agree with what is said in the statement above, for I personally hold a view that everyone is unique especially they live in different times. However, in a not dissimilar way, I also agree there are some things still remains the same as before, and will be in the same, at least similar way forever. As it stands, it is hard to say are there really significant difference between us and our ancesters.

It is not to deny with the development of our society, our life is becoming increasingly convenient. We have TV to get the latest information of the world; we have telephone to communicate with anyone we want no matter where he or she is(of course we should have others’ phone number); we also have the most important tool------computer, or how can I take the test by this way now? But for our precendencors, they might never think about this, they can only write letters when they want to get connect with their families or friends, which would take a long time for this kind of communication, or worse, the letter may be missed so two persons had no chance to reach each other forever. In this way, we are definitely different from what people are in the history.

But, as far as I am concerned, what is different is only on the surface. No matter how rapid our society is advancing, no matter how developed our life is, I strongly believe there are something called spirit will never change. Since long ago, our ancestors are admiring peace, Olympic Games, which has been hold since 776BC to stop wars, is still the most important sports meeting around the world, showing our people now is also adoring peace. This is quite ture on the question of freedom, too. Almost every country in the world protects citizens’ freedom in law clearly. What’s more, other virtues, such as loyalty, kindness, love for ones’ country etc. are shared by both the modern world and our forefathers so far and perpetually. As I see, what is the essencial part of human beings is just this kind of things.

However, what remains the same is not only the mores, but also other thing in several aspect. As for science, Newton once said “If I have seen furture, it is because I stand on the shoulders of the gaints’”, showing scientific research must be based on the forerunners’ experience, which to a certain extent implied the close linkage between ancient science and today’s. Scientists hang down their results generation by generation, including their persistance and creativeness. As for liberal art, the philosophy of Socrates, the theory of Confucius, is never giving up their use as a director of today’s life. Their thoughts are accepted all through the world, applied to solve problems in the reality, which seems unbelievably fascinating. As for The Second World War, people come to the conclusion that wars are of no good to the whole world, even in today, it will still bring a lot of sufferings and tragedies. Historical experience can be borrowed by us to decide
the war going forward tells us there must the same factors in the old times and now.

Whatever else said about this, difference and similarity always exist at the same time, people would never come to the answer whether people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history. For the standard to judge difference also differ in everyone’s heart. And in my heart, the chief benefit of the study of history is not to break down any illusion, but to help us pave a way to a brighter future.

The author claims that the chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people from the past in which I think should be separated into two aspects. Does study of history truly confirm that we are totally different from people who lived at any other time in history? And is this consequence the chief benefit of the study of history? (真有才)I fundamentally agree with the former while I couldn't agree the latter as I would discuss below.
Admittedly, there are many differences among different ages. Such as the attitude of treating women, the attitude towards science and the attitude towards religions and the like(是不是就是指类似前面那些事) have changed a lot. Cultural mores, customs, values and ideals are often referred by people to make a comparison to the past(这句话想说明什么). As we all know that human being change their living condition from caves to thatched cottage, then to block house and finally to skyscraper. It is, indeed, inaccurate to say that we have nothing change in comparing with the other time in history. One of the most famous examples is that before Twentieth century, the sixties, women's status was in a very low place. However this attitude of women's status totally inverted after the Women's Liberation Movement which took place in Twentieth Century, the sixties in USA. Therefore, people do have something different among different times in history.(这里只举了一个例子,多举几个,说明问题)(我觉得你有点跑题了,前面说同意I fundamentally agree with the former ,现在又举出不同意的例子,我建议改成partly agree
However, this assertion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history can't not be judged by those things on the surface. To understand what is really different, first we need to explore the natures of things. For instance, fashion changes every day, however does it mean that the nature of fashion changes every day? I'm afraid not, because the instinct of fashion which is the pursuing of beauty that from women doesn't change at all. And see from the ways of communication and mass media, people only read newspapers early on, then radio televisions are invented and now, internet becomes the quickest way of communication. It seems change a lot, but we need to notice that the essence of seeking information doesn't change that is to record information. Secondly, although our circumstance has made a difference(这个短语,可以这样用么), the law of historical development would never change. That is justice will eventually prevail over evil, residents will always guide the mainstream of history, failure would happen if leaders go without the masses and the like. No matter how the time changes, those regulars of history would never change.
And as to the former of this allegation which in my opinion is thoughtless would have a pile of flaws. Because there are many other more important benefits in study history. To study history is not only to find out differences. History is a mirror which possesses many functions like understanding
the origin of mankind, prevent the historical tragedy
from happening again, learn some knowledge of management of natural disasters and the like. For instance, we understand the control of military strategy and even business applications by reading the Three Kingdoms; we study the nuclear accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl to avoid nuclear accident happen again in the future; we get a better guidance in helping our children grow up accurately through research B.S Bloom's pedagogics. Thus in my opinion, in this study, people should place more emphasis on the role of previous generations to apocalypse the offspring.

To sum, beneficial it might be to appreciate the unchanging nature of humankind, however it is equally beneficial to understand and appreciate significant differences between peoples of different time periods(感觉着组织的有点乱)----in terms of cultural mores, customs, values and ideals. What's more, to study history is not such a simple thing to find out differences among different eras, there are a great deals of values exist in this job._____________________________________________________________________改15对不起,早就改好了,我忘了贴
When retrospection past, we often tend to look down upon the way of cognizing and changing the world by the ancients, and a sense of superiority will be generated spontaneously. But as the Bacon put it "Histories make men wise", the illusion will be eliminated by comprehensively study of history. Thus, I completely agree with the speaker's assertion.

With the growing development of the technology and increasing progress of society and economic, the world have been changed drastically, and with the help of the up-to-date technology we can learn more essential phenomena about the nature, as well as the world, as a result, we may naturally find that we are much more different
than
(用than 合适么)the ancient. However, we have failed to consider that what we are learning and what we have learned are based on the knowledge that accumulated by the ancients. For example, it was always considered that the earth was quadrate, and rain was controlled by Zeus, but it is common knowledge that the earth is round and rain is liquid precipitation. However, all the scientific knowledge is the process of accumulating by history, we are just standing on the shoulder of the ancients, and it never means we are significantly differing from them.(关于你举的例子,就是以前的人们的一些认识,但没有反映出我们是从中得到了些什么,而促使世界进步的,所以我建议举一些诸如在哥白尼日心说虽然是错的,但在这基础上我们开始了对于逐步正确的认识,加上一点自然的过渡,也学会更好一些~~~~个人意见哦)
(基础)
Furthermore, it is history which recorded all the process of development of technology and how human beings cognize the world. And we still learn lots of useful knowledge from the ancient by studying history. For example, by learning Chinese educational history, we can learn the pith of "Teach according to his ability" which was advocated by Confucius, and it will well direct the today’s teacher to impart knowledge. Another example is that "The Art of War" is still directing many military theories. An even more remarking example is that the Newton's gravity and Einstein's relativity are playing vital role in the modern technology and living, especially in astronomy. It is, therefore, the people at other time is entirely possible never foolish than us, and maybe from current to thousands years latter, we will continue to learn their ideologies and theories.
(指导)
Finally, the essence of studying history is eliminating its dross and absorbing its pith
(恩恩同意). We can find some fallacy made by the ancient, and maybe it is very preposterous today, but we should know the disadvantage of their technology at that time, and how hard to get useful information and communicate with other who were dedicating in studying the same field at that time. Today, the advance of network makes man can easily communicate with each other, and we can conveniently know what the others are studying and effectively debate with them. It is, thus, the headway of society has made the world much smaller than before, but we are doing the same things as the ancient--cognizing and changing the world in the same manner--by using tools. What has been changed is the tools.

In sum, the study of history do break down the illusion that we are much differing from the ancients, and no matter how the world will be changed, the essence of human being--cognizing and changing the world, is never changed.
(虽然我不专业,但很喜欢这个结尾( o )!不错哦)

What can we study from history? The speaker claims that the chief benefit is to let people in one period of time know that they actually share much in common with people who lived at any other time in history. Intricate as the topic is, following explanations are necessary.
Though our society is changing with each passing day, history helps us discover how our world evolved. Human development is a gradual process, so that we can find that people's commonness exists in any time. We learn that basic human nature—our desires and motives, as well as our fears and other basic characteristics—has remained constant over recorded time. Through this cognition, we can benefit as a society in dealing more effectively with our enduring social problems. Meanwhile, people have the exploring spirit, because this, even if we know much more about the unknown world than our ancestors know, people are still committed to explore it. We know the importance of freedom and therefore differentiate good and evil in World War II; we know the economic sophistication and therefore predict outcomes of financial crisis; we know the humans' yearning for beauty and therefore establish aesthetic standards. Accordingly, it is not exaggerate to suggest that every new form of event related with human beings is similar with its foregoing counterpart; or at least, the difference is not as significant as many people think.
Definitely, there are many differences between people in different period, such as custom, morals, and the daily life. For instance, we have evolved from the barbaric slave society to the peaceful society, which means that we are no longer lived in the circumstance full of violence and unguaranteed safety. What is more, with the development of technology, we can communicate each other easily, even they are in two continents, by using mobile phones and personally computers, instead of using writing letters as the only way to connect over long distance in ancients. In addition, the forefathers could not imagine what problems we need to face today, the growth of population, the environment pollution, the cloning and the technology moral issue.
Insofar, the foregoing discussions all support the assertion of the author; admittedly the meaning of studying history is much wider than contrasting people in different times. From the standpoints of individuals, it can provide entertainments, meet the curiosities and so forth; seeing from a higher position, it can raise the ethos of a nation, guide the decisions of the leaders, etc. However, it is unreasonable to demand one assertion is perfect in every side, and we just need to absorb the merits of this assertion, that is, thorough studying history, we may know more about our ancestors, and thus, know more about ourselves.

I cannot full agree with the issue. History is a reservoir of human experience. People have been leant a lot from history. The benefit above is not the chief one. We should approach problem in a relatively all-sided way.

On one hand, no matter when the people lived [in], people always have common things as the forefathers. The development of human is a gradually process. Everyone has basic desires and motives, just like our fears and other basic characteristics. Set the emperor as an example, almost every emperor has a great desire of aggression. When
their
country is the stronger one【复数】, the emperors want to invade the weaker one nearby【论证不充分,感觉没说完】. Another bad desire is greed which is one of seven sins. It is because【可以考虑直接用because of
the greed, two world wars were happened. Thousands of people were died in the war. From the power of atomic bomb by the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we understand the cost of war deeply. After the explosion, the two cities turned into a purgatory and all the buildings were destroyed. The civilian was homeless while 【andsomebody probably suffered from the strong radiation was【were ill even becoming a mutation. We can learn from the history that people always have greed and we need learn how to control it.【没有写清楚人们之间的相同点】

On the other hand, the people in different time have different values. Their attitude of everything is changing. Before 1865, the Negro in the American were treating as slaves and their position is lower than others. Until 1865, the civil war was over and Negro was freed by Abraham Lincoln who is one of the greatest presidents in America. The liberation of Negro slave were changed the attitude which treat Negro as slaves . Everyone in the world is equal and no one should be discriminated. Gandhi is another example; he is the greatest leader in India who is called Mahatma Gandhi. His purpose of nonviolent protest has influenced the entire world. Through these changes in the past, our attitude is more perfect.【感觉你的例子有点偏离主题,应该再写清楚点】

Moreover, history is able to revise the conception of descendant. But mistake cannot be avoid because people always has the historical limitation. The wrong or ridiculous one maybe is去掉 true in the future. For example, Mendel is a good example. He is a geneticist who is the founder of modern genetics. Mendel reaching the hereditary law in 1865 but none of the researcher supports him. Until 1900, his meaningful achievements were being affirmed. Furthermore, descendant can learn the experience from history to avoid the mistake. Soviet Union is the precursor of the Communist, but it is an example of failures. The government failed to deal with the conflict in the union and has a problem of economy. In China, the government insisted upon the policy with the Chinese characteristics preventing the same mistake from Soviet Union.

The function of history is more than to break down the illusion. It is merely a part of history【it 指代不明,不应该用句号。】. We should learn the history, understand the history and utilize the history.
