TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Admittedly, doing research is a private career to scientists; everyone has the right to choose his favorite direction of research even sometimes the results may be unusual or idiosyncratic. I agree insofar that it is important for scientists to pursue their individual interests.
However, since the impact of scientific researches is so strong, the scientific researches should also be consider with the moral standards and ethic commitments to prevent from leading us to a catastrophe. In general, scientists will not do will in their fields if they only care about the benefits to society, neither can society benefit from their researches if scientists just meet their needs without regard to social impact.

Interest is the paramount impetus for scientists to make endless progress. Just as a motto says, interests are the best teachers. It is hardly imagine that scientists have breakthrough in the fields which are boring to them. Take Mary Curies for an example, this excellent female scientist writes in her biography which says it is interest that keep her approaching to the truth, which make the whole research of full pleasure and beauty. On the contrary, a Chinese mathematician is compelled to change his direction of research to cater to the needs of the whole nation during Culture Revolution of 1970’s. Unfortunately, he achieves nothing since he lacks enthusiasm to solve problems and hence cannot devote his talents to the new field. In fact, by confining the researches to a limited scope which has less attraction to scientists, much great innovations might be dismissed.

In addition, it is unfair to judge researchers based on whether their work makes a contribution to society. Since scientists are usually standing on the cutting edge of the unknown world, even scientists themselves are not sure about the contribution or impact that their researches will bring about, no mention that the ordinary people. Many great inventions or discoveries may be treated unfairly as useless gadgets. The striking example is the discovery of electricity. When Faraday first exhibited his discovery of electricity, few people realized how powerful and useful the discovery would change the whole society. A lady even mocked at him and regarded the discovery as trick. But just as Faraday said; the discovery of electronic is like the birth of baby. It may seemly have no contributions to the society now, but will turn to change the whole world when it” grows up". This example clearly show the infeasibility of just concerning researchers with the contributions they make. Unless people can exactly predict the impact of new researches and discoveries, many excellent inventions may dismissed by the unfair judgment.

However, that does not mean that scientists should only pursue their individual interests without regarding the ethic commitments and moral standards. Curiosity and interest are not the excuse to commit unjust things. For example, some scientists may favor to use living people as materials of vivisection experiments, which is against human rights and relevant laws. Such behaviors should be exhibited by government. Since scientific researches and inventions have such a strong impact to alter our society, we have to pose constraints to control them in proper way. These constraints are laws, moral standards and ethics.

Overall, the development of technology is such a complex issue since it can lead us to a much more prosperous society but also can lead us to a catastrophe which we cannot avert. To better improve the development, it is more important to encourage scientists to pursue their individual interests as long as they are not against laws and moral standards in order to bring out more excellent inventions.
