走过路过拍一拍!今天这个好拍,感觉好像写跑了,而且写BODY2的时候突然没思路了!

ISSUE 208: “The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about asociety’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of itspeople.”

(Words: 555)

Cultures in differenttimes have their own different characteristics. And even in the same time, people living different regions have formed different cultures with their ownfeatures. Such differences between different cultures are presented in manyways, such as costumes and behaviors of people. Simply depending on theseexterior characteristics, however, a man would fail to deeply understand aculture which is totally different from his own.

No doubt, in thedifferent phase of the evolvement of a culture it presents different cultural featureswhich we can easily find through observing the costumes and behaviors of peoplewho live in the different ages. China has a history of approximately 5,000years, experiencing about 83 dynasties. According to the antiques unearthedfrom ancient tombs by archaeologists, we can clearly find that ancient Chineseliving in the different ages created, inherited, and developed their own cultures. The unearthed clothing from different dynasties, for example, exhibitsignificantly different attributes, such as styles, textures, and colors. The clothesfrom Tang dynasty have been usually thin and light, while those from Qingdynasty have been commonly thick and heavy. Also, According to the ancientdrawings, we can clearly see that the people of Tang like to curl their hair ontheir head, while the people living in Qing dynasty usually braid their hair. Allthese differences reflect people’s favorites, capabilities of manufacture, andeven social ethos in different dynasties. Surely, the people’s appearances areconducive to getting to know more about a disappeared ancient society.

Even today, however, people living in the different regions have different cultures. Obviously, thereare too many examples. In Asian countries there is much more rigid hierarchy thanin North American countries. In Japanese companies, the subordinates alwaysneed to make a civil bow to the people with higher ranks, showing their respectand deference; yet, in American companies, the relationship between employeesand employers is much more equal and friendly. Such a difference apparentlyindicates the difference between both cultures.

Although the appearanceand behaviors of people can definitely tell us some interesting things about aculture, and are helpful for us to find some ideas of a society, we cannot havea complete understanding of a culture and a society in this way. As we know, Chineseusually use chopsticks when they have a meal, while Americans commonly useknives and forks. We can easily find they are different tools, but we usually failto discover the essential difference in their cultures. Chopsticks are a symbolof wit, while knives and forks represent power. This is the essential differencebetween Chinese culture and western cultures. Thus, it is difficult, or evennot wise, for a man to deeply understand a new culture with different sourcesfrom his own, only depending on the people’s dress and act.

In sum, observing theappearance and behavior of a society, sometimes, is an easy and direct way fora person to rapidly get to know about the society and its culture. For thosepersons who would like to deeply understand the culture of a society, it is agood begin for them to learn the language and history of the society. Only by livinga life in this society for a long time, a person could have opportunities totouch and understand the essences of its culture.
