"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
With the development of society, many applied courses, such as engineering, economic, management, should be required to correlate to actual work outside so as to make college students gain new information and abundance experience. Also there are several curriculums, for example, pure mathematics, theoretical physics, philosophy, in college that are too theoretical to relevant to work outside. Therefore we should take different/diverse measures to advance different courses regarding specific various conditions.
Nowadays a sizeable number of faculties in college owe work outside the school which are close to what they tech. These faculties have an easy access to the practice world. As is common knowledge that amounts of academic problems come from the practice. Through working outside, the teacher would be easier to face the rapid change of his/her career and update the content of his/her course timely. Moreover working outside may have an effect to offer new or brilliant ideas for academic research. Faculties, who owe outside work, can bring these new information and means to students. In view of these facts, requiring college teachers working outside in professions relevant to the curriculum they teach plays a crucial role in up-grading the quality of instruction.
However, the statement that all faculties should be required to work outside is too broad to some extent. All faculties include all faculties from all academic areas in college. Common sense tell us that several courses, like theoretical mathematics, physics , history, ancient langue, philosophy, are quite hard to relevant to practical work outside the academic world. Because these areas are high abstract and theoretical and there are few work close to them. It is not suitable for faculties from these areas to work outside so as to improve the instruction quality.
Then how to advance the level of teaching of these areas, only few related jobs in society? Actually, to make some improvements in these abstract areas often needs continuously accumulation of knowledge, timing born of genius and frequent communication in academic. As is known to all that in order to make the students in these theoretical areas obtain much, including knowledge, means to study and research, upgrade of ability,
professions who can not work outside to gain new information still have many approaches. Though equal communication with professional, student would gain a whole understanding of the course and have a chance to find problems and then solve them easily and efficiently. The faculties should focus on what they take research on strictly. In addition, the measures other than requiring faculties work outside, such as constructing perfect management and standardizing constitution in college, are quite beneficial for the boost of instruction.
Obviously, in some applied curriculums, specifically, market trick, economic and engineering, having a work outside the school indeed makes the faculties have much access to obtain mounts of benefits. And then the students could gain important information from the teachers timely and conveniently. However it is universally acknowledged that working outside in the relevant area is not the only way to boost the quality of instruction in college. And there are many other effective approaches to improve the education. Concerning about the fact of some curriculum such as pure math, physics, philosophy, rare practical work related, some steps except/instead of working outside should be taken to upgrading the college education. |
