论点：支持，科学界应该独立，而且科学极大地改变了我们的生活。
1，政治家不是科学家，政府本身对科学界并不熟悉，如果对科学研究限制过多就会影响科学的发展。政府对科学界的限制也往往是从本身的利益出发。比如：提倡那些可以带来效益的研究，而那些基础研究却被忽视，从而形成科学界的发展不平衡。
2，科学界的发展给社会带来极大的繁荣，比如：交通便利等。
3，不得不承认的是，一些科学技术的进步给社会带来很多问题，
   比如说：环境污染，克隆技术威胁人类道德，核武器的巨大危害等。
最后要指出：这些是人们提出了要限制科学研究的要求，但是科学本身并没有错误，错误的是人类怎么去应用。所以政府更应该限制的是科学成果的应用，而不是科学研究本身。


Should government place, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development? With a further carefully consideration, I agree with the speaker, because governments has no privilege to decide science, moreover the development of science brings more benefit which have changed our life enormously.

First of all, the government leaders are not scientists, they are not familiar with science since they could not reckon that what kind of research are worthy to be done and what it would bring. It is acknowledged that one who is no uniformed, he has no right to view his opinion. On the other hand, the governments make restrictions on science sometimes just depending on the daily life interests without a long-term perspective. They have to solve the immediate problems to make the whole society compatible, so it is possible to neglect the fundamental researches. What is more, much limit has negative effects on science development. Such as in the Middle Age of Europe, Christian controlled the whole society and people's minds, with only permitting to read books which were related about Christianity, so did the researches. All impeded the excellent development of science and ideologies. The history of science development tells us that without free atmosphere of science and researches, there is no big step in science.

In addition, scientific research and development have resulted in a great change in the mode of society. They provide people more convenience, comfort and great prosperity. For example, people today can travel fast by automobiles and airplanes, whereas only in the last century they were traveling by horse-drawn buggies and bullock carts. If we go back to ancient times, people had to travel on foot. The new methods of communication such as mobiles, telephones and so on, make the contact more fast and easier at all times and places. Scientific inventions have eased our lives not only physically but also intellectually. Paper helps spread the ideas of scholars while common people can engage their minds by reading. Internet and computers broaden horizons, deepen our thinking with more information about others and the whole world, they can also perform repetitive tasks and have made possible universal access to information. So science has credited with tremendous advance in our society.

However, we have to admit, science is a two-edge sword, with having both positive and negative effects on people. There are many serious problems caused by the development of science. For instance, too many cars and some chemical elements with emission of exhaust bring pollutions of air, the London Smog Disaster of 1952, it was a nightmare and horrible memory for local citizens which cost at least the death of 4,000 and led many kinds of diseases; nuclear weapons just the explosions of two atomic bomb directly caused the death of 30,000, threatening to the safety and health of Japanese; what is more, the clone impinge on our ethnic bottoms, basic nature laws and legal principles. Should we continue to research about it? Many people focus on this view and discuss intensively.

In sum, we are not wrong with the use of science but how to use it. So the government should limit the application of scientific achievements instead of scientific research, making good use of science, which maximizes the effectiveness and development while minimizes the rate of risks.

To begin with, it is indisputable that intellectual education contributes greatly to the individual student as well as the whole society. In the respect of a single student, the development of his or her capacity for reasoning and logical thinking always playing a great role on whether he or she will get a good job and achieve accomplish on it, which is the guarantee of a pleasant life. In the respect of our society, it needs a multitude of talents who are good at reasoning and logical thinking to make it operate properly, stable and harmonious. Without wise brains in different kinds of areas, the society can't survive, not to speak of developing.

这一段你并列说明了对个人，对社会，intellectual ability很有用。但是呢，就是两个并列的assertion，没例子，也没有具体分析为什么有用。后面without那句严格来说也不算论证，其实是这个套路：A很有用，没有A就不行。这其实是在外面画圈圈，为啥A有用，为啥离了A就不行？没有深入进去。

划红线的地方不算是A有用的原因吗？还应答怎么深入呢？盼解答~~~~~~~~~~~

我觉得不算，这个有点绕圈圈的意思，“推理逻辑思维很重要”，“推理逻辑思维是令人满意生活的保证”。这两个可以看做是同义的。这就好比，你说A很帅，别人问为什么呢？你说“因为A吸引人”一样。“吸引人”和“很帅”都是抽象出来的主观结论。别人不会通过你这个“吸引人”的理由感觉到他很帅。这就是所谓的“隔”。那怎样才是不“隔”呢？你如果说A鼻梁很高，眼睛很大很深邃，面部轮廓坚毅。这样才算深入进去了。。。

回到本题目，我认为的深入，应该是从推理和逻辑能力能够发挥什么作用，而这些作用又会怎么影响到intellectual ability上面。这才叫深入了。

With the advent of Industrial Evolution, advanced technology has transformed our life into a dramatically comfortable enjoyment. Increasing job positions and  higher salary render a much higher living standard, people initiated to follow fashion and buy luxury products to show their tastes and reputation. Development of internet and communication tools gave rise to a much more convenient way to contact others. When everyone consider luxuries and conveniences as benefits to our society, however, do they exert that positive influence on earth?

To begin with, in modern time, as we all acknowledge that economic base determines the superstructure. That is to say, only if people fulfill their basic needs, can they dream about great cause that they never thought before. According to Maslow hierarchy of needs, at the very beginning, human have to solve psychological issues, hunger, thirsty, clothes, shelter, to name a few. Then, they continue to realize the safety needs, social needs, and self-esteem needs. The last but most significant step is to complete the self-fulfillment needs. When people reach that step, that means they become truly strong and independent ones. It is patent that if no economic bases there, even assuming people maintain a profound goal , they can hardly fulfill it with adequate vigor and materials. Therefore, luxuries and conveniences are two essential components for people to develop into great individuals.

What is more important is to be independent in thought and ideology. A real great man , one way or another, is the person who matures both in material and thinking. People barely reach that level since to be independent in ideology requires numerous fundaments. For example, contacting with some celebrities and leading thinkers is indeed helpful, as they could share valuable thoughts that we never gained and stimulate brand-new thinking on our own. Nevertheless, only when people live a relatively rich life could they have the fortunate opportunity to get in touch with those celebrities. People can donate for thinkers and scientists’ research so that it is more proper to communicate with them.

Nonetheless, if people are addicted in luxury and convenient life, they may satisfy with current situation and remain stagnant. Under this circumstance, they no longer gain chances to develop into strong and independent ones. Excessive luxuries and conveniences do harm one’s life. People stop planning for future promotion, education and self-development, they naively consider life would stay comfortable forever without any efforts to struggle for it. They quit jobs, stay at home, spend ostensible endless money purchasing luxury products. Some people depend on convenience extremely , they stay at home day and night , buy pizza on internet, work through TV conferences, everything seems available. However, their face-to-face communication skills and independent work ability are degenerating at an alarming pace. Without internet, they can hardly survive.

Admittedly, it is critical to live a modest luxury and convenient life, but regulation from oneself and surrounding is even more essential. When people gain enormous money and conveniences, they could enjoy it, or pass on them to others. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft company, donated most of his possession to foundation. For society, more poor people obtain precious opportunities to receive education and living support. For Bill Gates himself, he gained great reputation ,and what is more important, effective self-discipline from abusing money and addicting in luxury life.

In conclusion, we may draw the generalization that most of the time, luxuries and conveniences do help people approach to success and become strong ones, but discipline could never be abandoned since it exerts critical effects to keep people from deteriorating.

University education today has been confined to a rigid mode-everystudent is required to choose a major field of study and has to spend most oftheir energy and time on it. It is undeniable that taking courses outside thestudent's major will distract their concentration and thus has a negativeimpact on their grades. However, I am convinced that all-round education ismuch more beneficial than detrimental to student.


First and foremost, as defined by the world-known French sociologist,Pierre Bourdieu, the ultimate purpose of modern university education is thestudents' successful socialization, that is, to help them live a better life inthe modern society, and leave the lofty pursuits to student himself to seek.What the society need are individuals with a comprehensive knowledge system,which will make university students survive in the ever-changing modern world.It is very likely the problems a man encounters in his career are beyond thescope of his major. Most students will enter the real world instead stay inacademia, thus they need a sturdy mastery of a variety of practical disciplines.


Secondly, interdisciplinary study provides a better understanding and isof crucial importance to your major. For instance, a student majored ineconomics will never make a distinguishing economist unless he established asolid foundation in mathematics and statistics. However, an economist will getconfused and lost if he immerses himself into mathematical and econometricmodels. At this time a retrospect over history and a glance over sociology helphim better understand the models he established. And without fundamentalmastery of literature, his academic efforts would have trouble turning intoarticles on journals and periodicals of economics.



We cannot rule out the possibility that a student's major may not bewhere his interest lies or not the most suitable discipline for him. The caseof Sir Charles Darwin serves as a perfect example. His early interest in natureled him to neglect his medical education at the University of Edinburgh. Afterthat he continued his study in nature and finally completed his masterpiece-the Origin of Species. There are numerous celebrities and great men whoachieved their success outside the field of their university major. All-aroundeducation provides students with more opportunities and choices, and thussubstantially increases their chances of success.


To sum up,taking courses outside the major field of study is of great value to anindividual. With apt curriculum design and appropriate guidance, all-aroundeducation will turn out as a perfect choice for every university.

The speaker asserts that the only way to make discovery or progress is of through mistakes. The statement may have merits to some extent, primarily because it points out the importance of mistakes for discovery or progress. Yet, no invariable connection exists between mistakes and success. As a result, erring is important, but not necessary for discovery or progress.

To begin with, no one can deny the fact that mistakes play a great role in one's success, no matter for an individual or for a country. In the respect of individual, one’s whole life is a process to make mistakes and draw lessons from them, which is very meaningful. To infants, a mistake is to fall when they learn how to walk; to children, a mistake is to fall off their bicycles; to teenagers, a mistake is a bold X on their paper; to adults, a mistake is to be fired or a bad investment. Only though countless mistakes can one find his or her own faults and thus, make oneself a better person by removing them. Take Steve Jobs, who was fired by his own company--Apple Computer a decade after he founded it for example, but he didn't give up. Moreover, he learned from his mistakes and started over, which make him a CEO of Apple Computer again several years later. Thus, the person who has the courage to face his or her mistakes and work hard to correct them often score more and greater achievements. In respect of country, none of them is able to do everything appropriately over the long history. What really matters is to take effective measures to correct the mistakes which hamper the development of the country. For example, a few decades ago some people suggested that capitalism was appropriate for China as well as for the western countries, but we paid a heavy price when we tried to adjust us to capitalism. Thanks to Mao Zedong, who learned from the mistakes we have made and put forward: "Only socialism can save China", our country has been developing so prosperously and strongly. In sum, mistakes do have great importance in most circumstances both to individual and country.

Beyond this concession, however, I tend to disagree with the statement because it seems claim that mistakes and progress are invariably linked and inseparable. Consider, if one makes a mistake, will he or she make progress definitely? Do more mistakes represent more progress? I guess the answer is no. Firstly, one can never make progress if he rejects to learn from his mistakes and correct them. Secondly, many people even have no idea about the mistake they have made, let alone correcting it. For instance, with the enhancing of the living standards and quality, many parents, especially Chinese ones, cosset their children as much as possible by giving them whatever they want and being in favor of them however wrong they do without a tiny knowledge that what they are doing is deleterious for their children. As the case illustrate, mistakes don't contribute to progress in all conditions.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, it is not the mistake itself, but the attitude people treat it that help us make discovery and progress. When we make a mistake, we must have a positive attitude towards it and analysis the reason behind it without doubting ourselves. Furthermore, we should have the courage to overcome them without dejection. Only by the above can we learn from mistakes.
In the finale analysis, it is our attitude and courage when we facing the mistakes that really matter. We can succeed without making a mistake as long as we have the attitude and courage.
