TOPIC: ISSUE11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
It is well-known myriads of benefits come from cooperation, particularly when it extended to a global rage. Considering the universal participation in the education field, say, the establishment of a global university, it seems attractive, magnificent and education-oriented ostentatiously but in fact, many flaws and problems have been ignored.
First, for both students and professors, forging such an international environment can facilitate cultural exchange, academic communication, as well as provides them an excellent arena for brainstorming. Scads of severe social problems come along today as a consequence of lacking mutual understanding. A global university is like a kaliedoscope, where students are granted with an opportunity to browse a different culture, learn another language, and even trace about some tradition which they are curious about. By doing so, they may have a fresh and vivid picture about the outside world, instead of blindly following some medium and critiques who may skewed their perspectives. And a comprehensive and palpable knowledge of others, both their success and faliures, is a good way to upgrade and enhance oneself. Therefore, to some extent, founding a global university is conducive for solving the world's most persistent social problems.
However, we need to figure out how much pragmatic values does this advice contain. First, the enduring social problems have their reasons to exist for such a long time. Issues like racial discrimination, cultural confliction have long stories that may date back to thousands years ago. The essence of this unfavorable phenomenon lies in inequality, both in social status and asset distribution, which can not be effaced and thawed by a simple global university.
Second, not every country is capable of devoting time and money to fulfill this goal. As we know, building such a university calls for not only spiritual support, but material donation which may be an impediment for countries suffering from a sea of woes. Take Pakistani for example, the mammoth flood inroaded recently, looting everything except lives of survivors. People have nothing to prepare for a global university for they cannot even satisfy their basic needs, say nothing about their consistent warfare, ethnic confliction, aids, famine and so forth.
Third, it cannot make any sense to rely on students alone who are fledglings that lacking social experience and common practice. Why students can lick those ingrained social conundrums which baffled a number of social elites, just because they graduated from a global university? If so, we should prepare our claps for the fruition of the Copenhagen climate conference as there are some global universities existed now. But what I witnessed was a scene of heads lolling with exhaustion.
Finally, academic life should always be a priority for students, at least not give its way to social problems. In my view, the two tasks cannot be counterbalanced, as the latter costs too much attention and energy which is needed for a methodical and devoted study and generally ends up with a sterile result, which may even engender frustration.
In conclusion, setting a global university is worthy in many ways, especially in cultivating talents who are familiar with multi-cultures, fluent in lingo-franca, and harboring an inclusive mind. They are bound to be pillars of society in the future. And cutting of inveterate social problems are counted on them but cannot totally tossed to them when they are still students.
